Whoopie Doo...It's My Birthday
I look at the calendar and realize it's my birthday. Looking around I see no presents, no cake, no funny hats...nothing. How depressing. They forgot me again. Of course why would they remember me? I'm just "here." Sure, I'm the one that gets to hear about everyone's problems. I'm "here."
Just once I'd like someone to listen to me. Yeah, that would be a great birthday present to me but no one remembered. You would think that someone would have remembered! I put my head down and sigh. Just another day.
No! I'm not going to let them get to me. I'm not going to get depressed over this. Think I'll get a bite to eat. I look around and see nothing, the cupboards are bare, so to speak. Damn. No! Not going there. Maybe I'll take a run. Ugh. Maybe not. No! I gonna do this.
A mile should do it. A mile isn't bad. Ok, off I go. One foot in front of the other, over and over. And over, and over. Phew! I need to do this more often. sigh The food fairy hasn't appeared. Think I'll take a nap. Zzzzzz
Huh? What? Sounds like someone's trying to come in. My heart starts to race as I creep out and take a peek at the door. I frantically look around for something to protect me with. I see the cookie jar but there's no time to get my gun. I see the door open but it catches on the chain. gulp I close my eyes and say a little prayer.
When I open them again the chain is off and the door slowly opens. I hurry back and hide in my bed. Sure, like that's going to save me. I'm hidden as long as I can't see them. The floor creaks outside my bedroom. I feel the bed move a little, then nothing but silence.
I slowly crack open an eyelid, just enough to see, without being seen. Huh? What's that? I open both eyes and I still can't believe what I see. It's a cake. Huh? I raise my head up and sure enough, it's a cake. Looking around I see him. He's watching me intently, probably trying to figure out how I'll react. I look back at the cake, then back at him. He's smiling now.
"You didn't really think I'd forget, did you? And, yes, that cake is all for you." I look at the cake, then back at him.
"Happy Birthday, Rex," Man Joe said, still smiling.
