Ah, I can hear them now, the outraged cries. I know. This isn't Perfect Trinity. It's not related to Kingdom Hearts. Hell, it's not even in the game section.

This, my friends, is my response to a challenge from my best friend. The terms? For me to write something short. Less than 500 words. And it couldn't be Kingdom Hearts. So, I chose Naruto. I figured this would be as good a piece as any to see how the Naruto community responds to my writing. If you all like it, please review and I'll know that I am welcome to post more stories in this world. (Just so you know, my friend's response to this was "WTF?")

Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto, any of its characters, or affiliates. Do not sue me 'cause all I can give you is an I.O.U.

He stared down at the name written in stone before him. A thousand memories came with that name: insults, fights, anger... power unrestrained... a cursed mark... sacrifice.

Oh yes. Sacrifice.

He closed his eyes.

There had been good times too, of course. Many of those insults and name-calling had been their way of showing affection. Almost as though, if they could insult each other enough, people would know how close they really were. He smiled.

Brothers.

"We were such idiots," he said, still smiling.

Each of them had protected the other, had held the other in his arms while their breath grew shaky, silently hoping for a miracle to come. They had survived so much together.

They had tried to kill each other too. He winced at the memory. A Chidori through the chest... Ow. Then again, the Rasengan wasn't much better.

"Hokage-sama, the meeting is starting soon," Sakura called behind him. He nodded his acknowledgment and turned towards the grave one more time as he put on the Kage headpiece, feeling the whole weight of his new position in Konoha. He took a deep breath and smiled once more at the grave before him, before turning it into a smirk.

"I win, Naruto."
