Nightmares, a Cold Case fan fiction by Mellie Erdmann

Summary: Lilly has a nightmare. One-shot, Lilly/Scotty romance.

No spoilers, set in no particular place in the time line.

Warning: mushy, tooth-aching, brainless one-shot.

A/N: My first one-shot, now gone through spell check. I didn't change anything, except my mistakes. Though, seeing as English still isn't my first language, I can't promise you won't find any more mistakes. Did my best, but still. =)

She heard the shot. And she couldn't do anything to stop the bullet from getting into the target. She wanted it. Desperately. But she couldn't. The bastard had tied her and she couldn't move. Now he was torturing her, forcing her to watch while he killed the man she loved.

Yes. Loved. She knew it, but preferred to lie to herself, hoping she wouldn't get hurt again. But she couldn't deny the feelings she had, not anymore.

Lilly gasped in pain when the man felt to the ground, blood seeping through his white shirt. Tears fell from her eyes while she yelled his name.

Detective Lilly Rush awoke scared, his name on her lips. The low light on her room calmed her down. She was safe. He was safe. There was no need to worry.

She got up and went straight to the shower, letting the water hit her neck and back and calm her down. Her breath returned to normal and she even smiled a little, enjoying the hot water, not aware that her usually pale face was even paler.

When he got into work, she was already there. She resisted the urge to wrap her arms around him and kiss him breathtakingly. She was just glad he was fine.

The day was normal, nothing to do except paperwork. She kept reminding herself she shouldn't be looking at him the way she was, but failed every single time.

Scotty Valens had realized Lilly was looking at him oddly. It was like she was relieved. And he wanted to know why. But she wouldn't let him in, not now. Thinking on a way to get the answer from her, he kept doing paperwork.

Lilly was tired. Tired of being strong, tired of hiding her emotions, tired of everything. And just now, all she wanted was to get home and sleep. While she was sleeping, she could almost forget everything she hated about her life.

Later that night, she sat on the couch for a few minutes, trying to get her thoughts in order and under control. The door bell rang.

"Scotty?" – she asked, surprised at his presence. He smiled.

"Hey, Lil. You ok?" – asked Scotty, concern evident on his eyes and voice.

"Yes. Why?"

"Well, you seemed a little off today."

His answer took her breath. If he only knew...

"I'm fine, Scotty, really."

"You sure?"

"Yes, I'm sure. You want to come in?"

"Am I bothering you or something?"

"No, it's ok."

He followed her in and to the couch, where they sat and talked about light matters for awhile. Then, to her own surprise, Lilly found herself telling him everything about her nightmare. When she finished, she could feel the tears falling freely down her pale cheeks.

Scotty knelt beside her. He wiped her tears with his thumbs and kissed her gently. She wrapped her arms around his neck and he pulled her closer, embracing her waist.

The kiss got deeper while Scotty carried Lilly to her room.

These days, Lilly Rush still has the nightmare, the one she sees Scotty Valens, her husband and lover, be killed in front of her. But now he is there to hold her every time she wakes and calm her down with gentle words and love declarations.

A/N 2: Told you it was mushy. Though now I'm sure there are much less grammatical mistakes. Thanks for reading!

Cheers,

Mellie.
