Just a short story from my site answering the question of what would happen if Scarlett called for Rhett when she was sick?
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The pain was unbearable. She needed Rhett But did he want her? He was going to leave as soon as she was well; the only reason he was still there was because of her fall.
Scarlett had no idea of how worried Rhett was that she was going to die. She didn't know that he was waiting outside of her room every minute of the day waiting for news; waiting for her to call for him.
Then, another terrible wave of pain flashed over her body, and she moaned, clutching the sheets pulled up to her chest. She needed Rhett. She needed his hand to hold. She needed his comforting words. "Rh-Rhett," she called, barely audible, "Rh-Rhett."
Melanie, who had been there since she had been informed of Scarlett's fall, came closer and took Scarlett's hot, wet hand, squeezing it. "Did you call someone, darling?" Melanie's face was emotionless and white, with dark circles under her eyes from lack of sleep.
"Rh-Rhett." This time, Scalrett's words were louder, and Melanie understood them.
"You want Captain Butler, don't you, darling? I'll get him for you, don't worry." Melly's words were soft and comforting. When she talked to Scarlett, the pain almost went away, but Scarlett knew that the pain would practically subside if Rhett were there. "Mammy, please get Captain Butler Tell him Scarlett's asking for him," Melanie said.
When Mammy entered the room, Rhett was sure something was wrong. Mammy never left Scarlett's side. It had always been Melanie who came out to give him any news. "Mammy!" Rhett jumped up. Mammy- Scarlett's not- she's not-"
"Now, Mist' Rhett, don't y'go an git youself all 'cited. Miss Scalrett's askin' fo' ya."
Rhett quickly moved out of the room and to Scarlett's side. He had begun to lose hope that she'd call for him. He was at the side of her bed in a matter of seconds. He put her head in his hands and pulled her up to kiss her forehead. Then, he took her right hand and began to massage it. For hours, he sat next to her, caressing her, and comforting her. Mammy stayed in the room, but Melanie politely left and decided to wait outside until Mammy ordered her to go home and rest.
Scarlett became strong with Rhett at her side, and having him there gave her a reason to fight. She began to recover, not quickly, but she was recovering.
Two months later, Scarlett was able to get out of bed and move around the house. She and Rhett spent a lot of time repairing their marriage. It was difficult. They had many arguments, and they knew they always would, but they loved each other, and to them, that was all that mattered.
