Rain.
I've always loved the rain.
Especially when Percy and I went for a drive when it only rained slightly. This night was different though. The lights shone off the rain drops on the window and created a disco ball effect. The light made Percy's hair more of a dark blue then black.
I've always loved Percy's hair. I longed to run my fingers through it. I would never tell him that. Best friends don't say things like that.
His hands gripped the wheel a little tighter than usual. I could see the whites of his knuckles even though it was dark. Beads of sweat glistened on his forehead. He looked nervous. I shook it off.
I focused on the sound of the soft rain. We haven't done this in a while. We have been in a drought here in New York. I wished it had rained sooner. I missed going for drives with Percy. As I heard the rain start an hour ago, my phone rang with the familiar dolphin squeak. I smiled at this. He had insisted that it be his ringtone. He's always had an Obsession with water.
"Want to go for a drive?" he had said
"Where to?" I asked
"A surprise."
"Okay…"
"Hey, look outside." So I did. There he was in all his Seaweed Brain glory. I smiled fondly at the memory.
I hadn't noticed the car stopped until Percy turned it off. Percy stepped out and walked to my door.
"We're here" He said nervously
"Where is 'here'?" I asked. He didn't reply. He just took my hand and pulled my out into the gentle rain. I looked around and gasped. I was the field Percy and I first met. The olive tree we had planted had grown since we were seven. Nine years is plenty of time to grow. I thought how Percy and I was very much like that tree. We've been through everything together.
"I can't believe you remembered." I said
"Of course, it's were I met the one I love." He said shyly. I spun around to see, in his hand, he had a small box and a single red rose.
"Percy?"
"Annabeth, I've been waiting for the perfect opportunity. I love you Wise Girl." He opened the box to show a blue-green promise ring. Green was my favorite color and blue was his.
"Percy…" I say stunned. He loved me too.
"It's okay you don't have to say anything. Can we still be-" I rushed forward and tackled him. We land on the wet grass; I was on top of his chest, crying slightly. I kiss him full on the mouth. He responded. We break only for air.
"Does that mean you accept the ring?" I giggled. He was so cute when he was clueless. I gently kiss his forehead.
"Yes, Seaweed Brain, yes" he grinned a lopsided grin.
"I wish I had rained sooner" he said. I laughed.
Fourteen years later, I'm telling my nine year old daughter this story. She has my hair and smarts, though she can be dense about some things. She also has her father's sea-green eyes, lopsided grin, and obsession with water. I couldn't ask for a better a family. I still can't believe when we are sixteen, we knew this would happen. I smile, as it starts to rain.
