Just a one-shot, had to write it, and don't really care if anybody reads it or not. I just had to get this out of my system before it got on my nerves.

He gazed at the elderly woman who lay before him on her deathbed. The raven hair had become gray in her old age; wrinkles had covered her once smooth face. Her smile was still there, but ravaged by time, illness, and pain. Her breath rattled in her chest, and she moved slowly.

"Heh, heh, heh," she laughed softly. "I remember when I first met you, Sesshoumaru, and from that day forward, I promised myself that I would be with you always."

'I remember too,' he thought, trying to hold back his sorrow. Images of the little girl who had helped him when he was hurt flashed before his eyes, he remembered feeling pity for the first time when he had seen her lay dead on the ground, attacked by wolves. He had pulled out the tenseiga without a second thought that day and brought her back to life, making her his ward.

Sesshoumaru had watched the little girl grown into a young woman, and as the years passed, grow old. Now, here he was today, sitting by her deathbed, watching the life leave someone who had in such a short time become so dear to him. He knew that this time, there was no bringing her back to life with the tenseiga. Then, he did something that he had never done in his life. He let the tears fall. Slowly, but surely, they fell.

He reached a shaking hand up to his eyes, touched the tears that had never before fallen. He pulled his fingers away and held them to look. 'Tears?' This was the girl who had melted the Ice Prince's heart. Her flaming passion and happy-go-lucky nature had helped him to open up, to feel emotion. But, her flame was diminishing, almost extinguished.

"Now, here's something that I never thought I'd see in my lifetime," Rin said quietly. "My dear Sesshoumaru-sama crying, and over a human," she laughed.

Sesshoumaru smirked at her, the tears still flowing freely. "Thank you," he said simply.

She looked at him, confusion in her eyes. "For what?"

"For helping me. You brought happiness into my life; helped me to feel emotions that I never had before. It means a lot to me. I really wish we had more time."

"What are you talking about, silly? We have plenty of time," she smiled. "Remember what I said? I promised that I'd be with you forever, and I'll keep that promise in death. I'll watch over you, my dear Sesshoumaru. I will never leave your side."

Sesshoumaru reached down and held the hand of his dear friend. "Or course," he said, having difficulty getting the words out. "Of course you will."

Rin's grip on his hand became tight, then relaxed. "Don't worry, Sesshoumaru," she took a deep breath and continued on. "I'll be back soon," She exhaled, and then went limp.

Sesshoumaru looked down at the woman. She lay perfectly still, her face relaxed into a small smile. "I'll see you soon," he whispered to her before standing up.

As he left the room, he could have sworn he heard a small child giggle, could he swear he saw a fleeting glimpse of an orange kimono and a small fistful of flowers in her hand. He shook his head, rationalizing it as his mind playing tricks on him. Wiping the tears from his eyes, he placed his stoic mask back on and walked down the hall towards his study to think.

"Goodbye, old friend," he whispered.

"Goodbye," the breeze whispered as it blew in through the window.

Ah, a bittersweet story, don't you think? The thought just sorta makes me get all hazy-eyed. I must say, I think that I did a good job on this. Please do tell me what you think of it.
