Hey everybody! This is my first LOTR fan fic! You can tell by my username that I'm a fanatic for LOTR, but I haven't come up with a poem or story about it before today. Maybe I didn't want to add my plainly amateur scribbling to Tolkien's brilliance or maybe I was too stupid to think of a good writing piece. You can take either reason, or both, if it suits you. Anyway, I've come up with this poem/story and I hope I did well! Please review!
The sound of dwarves swinging axes and singing old songs of mining and mithril filled the air of the mountain as Balin led his company of dwarves to reclaim the ancient mine of Moria. They paused outside the gates as Balin waited for the moon to come out of the clouds. A harsh wind blew across the sky and as soon as the moon was free, the silver etching of the door appeared. The silver lines criss-crossed to form writing that demanded a password to enter. Mellor, Balin pronouced the word carefully as the mountain door opened to reveal a musty and long deserted hallway. A roar of celebration erupted from the dwarves as they joyfully entered the mine.
Ironically, months later Balin and his company of dwarves were ruthlessly killed by goblins.
If only they had seen the poem that was obscured by a large bush, they might have turned back. This is what it said:
Though mithril silver fills this deep
And the wealth of it covers the way,
Still be careful stranger
Of finding death today.
Creatures in their dark tunnels delve
While the goblin tramples the path
Danger lurks within these shelves;
Dark water rushes past.
More than treasures are here;
There are things riches can't mend.
You have been warned stranger
Of discovering your end.
Years later, that warning was still forgotten until the stone finally crumpled away and now all that it left is a pile of rocks. No one else has tried to reclaim the mine of Moria and it will probably stay like that till the world's end, although in dwarven halls if you listen well, you can still hear the tragic tale of Balin and his company.
How was it? Please review, even if it is flames, because I don't mind those at all. I'm a kind of writer that needs feedback of all kinds. So review please!
