Chapter 1

Marigold strolled the streets of Fleet Street London, quite disappointed on how gloomy it was. Her parents had sent her here for her to get better. How on Earth could this air be any better than any other bustling city? She glanced at the piece of paper in her hand. She had no idea how to reach her uncle's house. "Excuse me sir but could you...?" He walked by her without a glance. "Some people.." She muttered. Brushing back her long wavy cornsilk colored hair, she glanced at the buildings around her. Her Uncle Todd owned a barber shop so perhaps it stood out. Then again all the structures were dull and colorless. She coughed into her handkerchief. "Oh dear I'm quite lost.." Her green dress stood out among the people here and she felt she stuck out like a sore thumb. Her blue eyes didn't exactly help either. Perhaps everyone thought she was a foreigner and not worth her time. "Oh please will you help me?" An older man stopped in front of her, seeming quite unhappy. "What is it girl?" She took a deep breath. "Do you know where the barber shop is sir?" He nodded. "Go down past the judge's house and take a right, it's above the pie shop." She curtsied. "Oh thank you sir." He grunted in reply and quickly began to walk away. Marigold began making her way down past the judge's house. She wondered what kind of man he was. She came upon a large mansion that could only have been his house. "Ok so down here and a right.." She turned onto the street and noticed the pie shop. "Oh finally!" No sooner had she said that when someone collided into her, landing her right into a puddle of mud. The person ran on without a word. Marigold stood up staring at her now ruined dress. "How rude are these people?" She felt her eyes hot with tears. Did she really have to live with such horrid people? "My young lady are you alright?" She looked up to see a older man, with graying shoulder length hair and a slightly hooked nose. She nodded. "Yes sir.. I was knocked over you see.." The man smiled sweetly at her. "I'm Judge Turpin I don't believe I've had the pleasure of meeting you before." She blushed at his kind words. "I'm Marigold, I've come here to help with my asthma.." She nodded towards the pie shop. "My uncle he lives there and I'm to stay with him." Turpin smiled and took her hand in his, gently placing a kiss upon it. "I hope to see you again Marigold." Her face once again reddened as she stammered her reply. "And I you Judge T-Turpin." She hurried upstairs to the barber shop to avoid any further embarassments. Knocking on the door she was greeted with a dull, "Come in." She cautiously entered. "Uncle Todd? It's me Marigold." Staring out the window was her uncle. He was tall and his black hair stuck up everywhere, a white streak crossing it. He wore a leather coat and trousers, both black. His arms were folded behind his back and he seemed to have been thinking. "Ahh my dear niece." He turned around revealing his pale face. "Oh dear what has happened to your clothes?" She looked at her ruined dress. "Someone pushed me into the mud." He sighed. "My dear London is full of pigs unfortunately. Get changed and I'll show you around a bit." I did as he said and changed into a blue
