Living a Lie

Living A Lie

[A/N:  This is a weirdly depressing poem by all of the Animorphs.  I know it's a tad confusing, but just bear with me, 'cause I'm sleep deprived.]

Did you ever dream,
Of the day that it began,
When the path of childhood ended,
And the road away opened,
In a flurry of crimson,
And we made our final choices.

Did you ever dream,
Of how it all began,
When we shed our skins of truth,
And began to live a lie.
Hiding behind masks of deceit,
And shields of fabrication,
With insidious words,
And a face of untruth.

Did you ever dream,
Of how it could have all come true,
Where Death, and Deceit,
Became our constant partners,
And the sky became red,
With tinges of blood,
That could never be washed away,
By the tears that we shed.

Did you ever dream,
Of how we learned the art of war,
Moving from point A to point B,
In a ruthless game of chess,
Mathematical equations,
Twisted to mean life or death,
Children's laughter turned into shrieks of pain,
And the lives that we once led,
Turned to lies.

Did you ever dream,
Of how we learned to thrill in fights,
When we learned about ruthlessness,
To feel the wondrous ecstasy in the battle,
The cold icy fire of revenge,
And rejoice in the pain,
Drowning in a sea of blood.

Did you ever dream,
Of how we learned to ignore,
To pass by the onlookers,
Caught in a deadly crossfire,
And begin to stop feeling,
To quietly hide at night,
To see the face of the enemy,
And not feel anything at all.

Did you ever dream,
Of how we learned to manipulate,
To say the right words,
To order others into battle,
Make life and death decisions,
And yet, have to face my own flesh and blood,
On the battlefield,
And know that it's either them or us.

Did you ever dream,
Of how we took on the burden of honor,
Learned the depths of our fear,
Learned what traitors can do,
Took every battle,
Not sure of who our people were,
Betray one, then the other,
Running away from fights,
Then bear that weight in our souls.

Did you ever dream,
Of how we learned to fly away,
To let the wind try to erase,
The stains of blood,
The bruises of a childhood,
Never eradicated,
Trying to stay in between,
Having to kill to eat,
Then caring for the ones who we've killed,
Halves that don't add up,
Running away,
Flying away,
Disappointing the ones who we love.

Did you ever dream,
Oh, parents of ours,
How your sweet little children,
Turned away from peace,
And learned how to live a lie?
