(A/N: Here is the conversation that inspired me to write this: Sara: "All of the fan fics about Boq are either Bessa, Gloq, or Boq trying to take over the world." Me: "I WANNA WRITE A FIC WHERE BOQ TAKES OVER THE WORLD!!!!" Also, Megalomania means you want to take over the world or something like that. And this is totally AU. Enjoy!)
Megalomania
Nessa wheeled into the room Boq was sitting in, holding a tray with tea on it. Boq took the tea, and Nessa asked in a warm, pleasant voice "Will there be anything else, Boq?"
"Nessa," Boq said, setting down his teacup. "I've asked you to call me 'Master Ruler of the World,' remember?"
"Yes, Boq," Nessa replied, turning around and going out of the room without another word.
Boq sipped his tea. Ah, this was the life. Nessa as his servant, the entire world under his control, and no one ever, ever, ever called him 'Bick' unless they wanted their head chopped off.
Boq had always been particularly fascinated with villains who wanted to take over the world in books, and now he was one. Well, not a villain, but someone who had taken over the world.
But there was a downside to all the fame, fortune, and power. Being Ruler of the World meant he had to deal with the problems of the world. For example, when the Upper Uplands didn't get enough rain one year and didn't have much food, they came complaining to him. Boq didn't really want to have to hear everyone's problems. But that was easily fixed. He just made Elphaba and Fiyero the global problem solvers.
However, there was one problem that couldn't be solved that easily. Boq knew that no one loved him. Sure, no one said anything bad about him, but that was only because they were afraid of what would happen if they did.
So Boq had no love, only fear and respect. And he couldn't change that.
Nessa was surprisingly happy working for Boq. He let her stay in his huge Ruler-of-the-World mansion, in a room just a hallway away from his. (It was twenty four wheel-rolls from her door to his—she had counted once.)
Nessa got to see Boq every day, even though she wasn't actually supposed to call him Boq—only 'Master Ruler of the World' like all the other servants. Nessa liked to think of herself as the head servant, and really, she was. Nessa was the first person Boq saw in the morning, when she asked him how he slept and if he wanted breakfast, and the last person he saw before he went to sleep, when she turned out the lights after reviewing his schedule for the next day and telling him to have sweet dreams.
Nessa had taken care of Boq when he had gotten sick with that awful Pig Fever that had gone around a few years back, and she attended all important meetings and announcements, helping him with what to say and how to react to questions people asked him.
Nessa would have thought that surely by now, Boq would have realized Nessa's love for him and maybe even loved her back. But he never noticed. He never once treated her as more than a servant.
So, that night, Nessa decided it was time to do something about it. When she came into Boq's room to read him his schedule for the next day and turn out the lights, as she always did, she did not say "Sweet dreams." Instead, she positioned her wheelchair so she could look straight into Boq's eyes, and said, "I love you, Boq." Then she wheeled out of there as fast as she could, turning off the lights as she left.
Boq lay there in the dark, unable to sleep because of what Nessa had said.
Maybe he was loved after all.
