Part 0: Intro
Chapter 1: The Stranger with A Favor
Date: 2013, March 13, 10:16 PM
"That's it, careful with her." Said a voice in the darkness, as she was being pulled toward ever deeper into the building. Her hands were handcuffed, and she was unable to see with the black bag over her head." Easy does it, I don't want her hurt."
"Let me go!" She yelled back, before she tried to wrestle free of her captors' grasp. The two individuals who had a hold of her were strong, far stronger than she was though she jerked side to side and was hard to keep from moving their grip was iron clad. As she struggled and squirm, suddenly she felt herself lifted before being sat down on a chair, padded for her bottom and bolted down to the ground from how it never moved. The ones who held her grabbed her arms and brought them behind the chair, before they locked them down to some clamp so she was unable to move. " I said let me go!"
"Hey, what's the meaning of this?" Said a familiar voice to her, as she heard someone else being pulled and coming closer to her on her left. She still couldn't see with the bag on her head, but she could catch the pink figure being brought in by two large individuals. His hands were also handcuffed and though he struggled too, she could see nothing worked in freeing himself from their grasp. The two beings brought him down into a similar yet larger chair, before he too had his arms raised and brought down behind him, unable to move or free himself. " What's the big idea?"
"Ah, not so fast!" Another familiar voice cried out from her right, although he was not dragged by his legs but being wheeled instead. Turning to look, she could make out the smaller green compatriot as he was shackled to his wheelchair. He was unable to get away as he was wheeled in to stop next to her. She heard a piston firing, and the wheelchair came to a stop, unable to move despite the turtles attempts. " Where am I?"
Suddenly, her bag was removed, and she was hit by a blinding light before her eyes adjusted. She was indeed shackled to a chair, and she found herself in a dark building, with a blackness that surrounded them as they sat shackled in an island of light. All around her and her friends, a darkness encompassed their surroundings, unable to make out where they were but inside somewhere where they wouldn't be heard or found. Which made her concerned, as she knew that it could mean only two things when a group was brought somewhere where they wouldn't be known.
On her left she saw her old friend Murray, a pink hippo whose biggest thrill was the fistfight or rumble from working in their line of work. Murray was the brawn of the bunch while also acting as their driver, and while she never found herself close to him she knew he had a weird crush for his van. A pink hippo with probably more muscle than fat, he had brown eyes and two teeth that stuck out whenever his jaw was closed. He was wearing the same light aqua t-shirt with white scarf he had worn in the past, as well as boxing gloves and the belt he had with their group's signature logo on it. Finally, he had on pants, dark orange ones which she always bothered her in the past how he never covered up down below. His white and red striped sneakers were still on his feet, and he still had the same aviator mask he had on, though she never saw a reason why he wore it.
Despite his size she knew the hippo was a softy at heart. He protected his friends nearly every time they met, whether it be helping them escape in his van or fighting off anyone who threatened to harm them. He liked to break the tension too, as even when she caught up to them Murray would make light of their situation in a way that was kiddish. But she knew that him being a big kid had more weight than just cracking a joke, as he got emotional a couple times when times were dark for them. The big guy had a big heart, something she admired for how he always was loyal to his friends even after he hurt the person to her right.
Turning to look, she saw Bentley, the small turtle who acted as the brains to the Cooper Gang's many thefts. Bentley was the smartest of the bunch, as he was a genius hacker, inventor, and scientist that made a lot of the smartest people she worked with on the opposite side of them look like amateurs. The green and brown turtle was wearing a brown bulletproof vest with a white button up shirt underneath with a red bow tie on top. He had on a pair of blue shorts too, and his white sneakers stuck out despite his small size in the dark space. On his head he still wore his round glasses, and atop the pith helmet she saw him wearing last time they met. He was wearing his brown gloves and was in his wheelchair, confined to it after an accident when the three of them worked to take down the Klaw Gang way back when. The chair looked to have been improved since the last time she saw him, as it seemed a little bigger and polished probably to make room for his new gadgets he installed in the chair.
The small turtle had a bravery to him that she only seen in the most accomplished individuals on her side of the force. He had always been brave with the group's heists despite his physique, and over the years she's chased them that confidence has grown immensely. Even after his girlfriend betrayed them and they lost their leader, he was determined to not rest until they got him back and be reunited once again. He was also quite devious she found out too, as he had gotten better at scheming for the group to accomplish their thefts and robberies. What started as mischief quickly took notice as a genius in the making over the years, like how he helped them take down the criminal Clockwerk or break into that fortress on Kaine Island. Despite his smarts and their gang's nobility at times, she had been trying to stop them for a very long time as while they were criminals, she was an inspector for Interpol.
Her name was Carmelita Fox, and she was the officer assigned to tracking the Cooper Gang down and preventing them from stealing or doing worse. She knew of the Cooper Gang for a while, but ever since they met in that opera house years ago she had been on their case ever since. A brownish-orange colored fox with blue hair and brown eyes, she had a golden earring around her right ear and a small almost unnoticeable mole under her left eye. She was wearing her favorite leather jacket from her dad, one of the few things she holds onto from him despite his past actions. Underneath the jacket she had gone back to wearing her zipped up midriff top from her earlier years, as she swapped it out for a sport bra but found that not as intimidating as before. She was wearing her dark blue pants too from long ago and had on her brown belt buckled boots the Gang last saw her in. She had on her yellow gloves as well, with her Interpol choker that had her badge wrapped around her neck too.
Carmelita had been a cop for a long time, and it ran in her family blood to serve on the side of the law no matter what. As equal in courage as she was in determination, she had not stopped trying to bring the Cooper Gang to justice for a long time. Even after they helped her clear her name from her former coworker Neyla and saved her when she was in trouble, she still knew they had to bring them in for the law. However, despite her rigidness she realizes that if they worked together, they could accomplish much like how they took down Le Paradox in their last adventure or brought the Contessa, a rogue officer, to justice. She holds a secret respect for the Cooper Gang and those in it, and even in their current situation she knew that the three of them could find a way out of this.
The three of them then took notice of one another, as they had now grown accustomed to the room's dimness. Murray then looked over to Bentley, and in his deep voice asked with worried wonder if his friend was real.
"Bentley? Carmelita? Is that you?"He asked in surprised glee, happy to see some familiar friends in a place he didn't know where. Turning to look he received a response from Bentley, who reacted in similar glee at seeing his old friend beside him.
"Murray! I thought I heard you, what are you and Carmelita doing here?"He questioned in his exasperated voice, before he saw Murray briefly struggle in his bonds before Carmelita answered him in her strong tone.
"I don't know, last thing I remembered I was leaving from a bust when I was cornered by these thugs and knocked out."She said, struggling in her bonds too before Murray said a similar answer after he gave up trying to break free.
"That's the same thing that happened to me! Although I was coming home when it happened."He said, looking at his friends as they tried in vain but failed to break free from their shackles. Bentley, trying to move his chair, then gave his answer too of where he came from.
"I was doing work in my lab when I heard an alarm go off and the power shutoff. All I remembered was seeing someone moving in the dark before I felt a pain in my neck, and then woke up being wheeled in here."He said, giving up on moving his chair before stopping, looking around the room before asking what was on all their minds. " Speaking of which, where are we?"
"I'm sorry for it having to happen like this, but I needed to speak to all of you immediately."Said a voice in the dark, before the group heard metal rustling in the dark and a table was brought over in front of them.
They couldn't see the people lifting it, but the two dropped off the simple fold out piece before leaving into the dark again. From the darkness the three could make out a pair of eyes approaching, autumn brown and carrying a chair in the dark. The figure set the piece down behind the table, his hands lingering before he let go and walked around to sit in it. He set his arms on the table, before he spoke in a calm voice with a sense of sincerity.
"I was hoping the first time I met the three of you would be a lot more pleasant then in, well, here." He raised his left hand before gesturing to the room around them, still concealed in the dark as he sat behind the desk in front of the three friends.
They could only make out his eyes, an orange-brown that reminded them of leaves in the fall. His face was concealed in the darkness, and the trio could only make out his eyes and the flash of his teeth as he looked on at the three of them. His arms were a mix of dark grey and black, and they came up to meet the edge of a collared shirt they could make out in the dark. His voice sounded like the trio's close friend but there was something different, a seriousness to it that the other was lacking.
"Who are you? Do you think you can get away with kidnapping a police officer!?"Demanded Carmelita, her face one of rage as she looked at the figure across the table, who cracked a smile at her before Murray spoke up too.
"Or a friend of an officer?"Said Murray, going along with Carmelita's threat as he couldn't think of one on the spot. Bentley joined in too on the demands, his voice calmer than the other two but with a temper in it nonetheless.
"We have friends, and they will find us no matter what you are planning on doing to us."Bentley told the figure, as he raised his right hand up and the trio heard footsteps approaching. They caught a red furred hand place three folders in the figure's hand before he brought his hand back down and laid out the three files out on the table from left to right. He grabbed the one on the left as Bentley continued, not wanting to appear scared especially considering all the three have been through. " You won't get away with this."
There was a moment of silence as the figure opened the folder and paged through it, the trio looking at him in anger as he calmly scrolled through the folder. He finally stopped on an entry, before he began speaking as he pulled out the page.
"Murray Bulks, born to Tom Bulks and an unknown mother in the year 1984. Orphaned after an accident involving his father which sent him to prison. Relocated to the Happy Camper Orphanage and serving as one of three orphans moved to that location."He said before he set the page down to Murray's side, the trio stunned as he went on grabbing another page from the folder.
"Bentley, full name unknown as he was given up for adoption by parents before hatching from his egg. With potential as a genius at an early age, was relocated from his original orphanage Goodwill's to Happy Camper to become one of the three residents." He said before he pulled out the page and set it down on Bentley's side, who looked at the piece of paper with a pale expression. He scrolled through before he found another and read it out loud too.
"Carmelita Montoya Fox, only daughter to terminated officer Allister Fox and current head of Interpol management Pamilla Fox. Raised by her mother with head of security Tobias Baxter, allowed once a year visits from her father due to complicated history involving the law and criminal cohorts." He said as he then placed down the page in front of Carmelita, who like the others was taken aback as the three viewed over the pages placed in front of them.
Each one was a profile of who each of them was, detailing tidbits about their past and status. The papers each had a photo of them in the right corner, with their images each being ones they had never seen before. The top of each paper had their names in bold, and along the left side listed was details such as their place of birth, parental info, movements over the years, careers and hobbies, and more that gave an overview of who they were. In some bits they could see were circled or underlined, things such as who their parents are or events that impacted them stood out most. The three were shocked, as the information listed was secret even to them and each other, however Carmelita was quick to recover before she shot up and questioned her captor.
"Some of this information is top secret, even unable to be retrieved except by those with specific clearance."She stated, before she continued. "How did you get access to this?"
"Making friends on both sides of the law to be honest, also keeping track of the three of you." Replied the dark figure, as Bentley and Murray slowly came out of their shock before Bentley asked in caution.
"Why would you be keeping track of us?"He asked, before the figure smiled wickedly and answered him.
"Simple really. I've wanted to see if you three had the potential to help Sly Cooper." He said matter of factly, as the three's eyes grew wide at hearing their lost friend's name.
Sly Cooper, the master thief whose status as the leader of the Cooper Gang was regarded on both sides of the law. Murray and Bentley had known Sly since they were orphans while young, the three of them being oddly the only ones at the Happy Camper Orphanage. The three grew up together, and when they worked together to become master thieves Sly led them as they went after the Fiendish Five, who killed his parents thus making him an orphan to begin with. Their leader, a rogue criminal known as Clockwerk, was an ancient foe of Sly's family the Cooper Clan who had hunted them for generations as Sly wasn't just a master thief, but the current in an ancient line of them. Just how far back the group wasn't too sure, but what was known was Sly's family had a code of honor to steal from the best criminals, as there was no honor from taking from the regular ones.
As for his association with Carmelita, Sly Cooper served as her greatest adversary as a criminal, with the two's chase spanning the continents. After they worked together and dealt with the Fiendish Five and Clockwerk, the two realized that they may have had more than just a cop and robber game going on. Slowly the two grew closer over the years, as they first dealt with the Klaw Gang, who were using the ancient and powerful pieces of Clockwerk for their own exploits. Then they worked together to retake Kaine Island and defeat Dr. M, a former member of the Cooper Gang Sly's father led. He wanted the vault on the island that held all the Cooper Clan's riches from over history. In the battle Sly had feigned amnesia, and then went into a form of retirement to be with her as the two gave into their feelings for one another.
That was until Cyrille Le Paradox, a criminal who had a score to settle with Sly because of how his father was imprisoned for failing a theft, began a time traveling hunt to erase Sly's lineage. Despite his retirement, Sly had been eager to get back into the action and so worked with his old friends once again to stop his family's history from being erased. Carmelita was heartbroken by this and pursued the returning criminals until she was pulled into their hunt when Cyrille tried to use her to get to Sly until rescuing her. Working together the four of them hunted down Sly's ancestors and stopped Le Paradox's henchmen from preventing them from being master thieves, before Paradox kidnapped Carmelita and Sly himself and was ready to destroy them. Working together with the rescued ancestors though, Bentley and Murray broke into Paradox's blimp and saved the pair, but as it began to crumble Sly stayed behind to defeat Paradox once and for all.
But that was nearly two weeks ago, and Carmelita, Murray, and Bentley have since tried to find him anywhere they can. Carmelita had been going into overtime at Interpol, busting criminals at an outrageous pace when she wasn't searching for Cooper. Murray had taken to pro-wrestling to busy his time when they weren't hunting for their lost friend. And Bentley, who had been also dealing with his heartbreak when his ex-girlfriend Penelope was working with Paradox, had been searching for him desperately in hopes he'd be alright. For two weeks the trio had been working toward finding him, but they had found no trace of him no matter how hard they tried.
Recovering from the shock of hearing her close friend's name first Carmelita was the first to speak out, her voice feigning innocence as she pretended to never have worked with him.
"Sly Cooper is a criminal, why would I help him?"She questioned, but the figure smiled before he answered in a snarky tone.
"You're kidding right?"He asked her, but she was unfazed by his response. He sighed before he opened the folder in the middle, as he combed through it too with a seemingly entertained smile on his face. Carmelita was about to comment why he was smiling, when he then found what he was looking for and pulled out four photos clipped together as he spoke. "You two make a nice couple by the way."
Worried by what he meant, the figure unclipped the photos before he set them down above Carmelita's profile paper in front of her. From left to right, they were pictures of her and Sly together over the years, and even more evidence that the two had been romantic. The first picture on the left was of them in Krakarov Volcano, the lair of Clockwerk and where they beat him the first time. It was the kiss they first shared after she hesitated on arresting him on the spot, an act he used to handcuff her as he and his friends escaped. The second was when they were in Rajan's Palace, a member of the Klaw Gang who was using the wings of Clockwerk to showoff for a party he was throwing. Sly went in disguise so he and his friend could steal the wings, but he danced with Carmelita to distract the room as his friends stole them while no one was looking.
The third photo was when they were in Australia and encountered the Mask of Dark Earth, a powerful relic that had taken control of Carmelita and grew her into monstrous proportions while poisoning her mind. Sly and the Gang managing to remove and destroy it, and the photo showed Sly caring for her as he laid her to rest while putting a blanket over her in the night air. The final photo was the one she held close, as it was her and Sly on one of their dates after he feigned amnesia to be with her. This one was when she stood atop one of the taller building in the France countryside, and she held him close as their photo overlook all the town in the dark of night.
Next to her, both Murray and Bentley were leaning in and peering at the photos too. Both had grins on their faces despite their predicament, before Carmelita turned and catching them both smiling, she shouted out in annoyance.
"It doesn't mean I helped him!" She stated, though both looked away to hide the smiles on their face knowing the stranger had a point. Ignoring her friends' reactions, Carmelita returned her focus to the figure across the table as she demanded in anger. " How did you get these? Who gave you these photos? Tell me so I can deal with them, once I'm done with you!"
She then attempted to break free of her shackles, her arms straining themselves as she tried to break free from whatever these goons used to hold her down. Throughout it all Murray and Bentley watched as she tried, the two struggling too but to no avail. Giving up earlier then her, her friends waited until she calmed down and finally gave up as she came to a rest again. The entire time, the figure across just kept his hands crossed with a look of patience in his eyes, before she finally sat with a loss of breath and he spoke.
"If you want to really know, then hear my offer first." He said, as the Gang turned their attention to him before Bentley responded.
"What kind of offer is it?" Bentley inquired, as the figure began grabbing the papers on their profiles and the pictures of Carmelita he set out. He then put them neatly back into the original folders he pulled them out of. Holding his hand up with the full folders, the same red hand from earlier grabbed it, before slinking back into the darkness as the figure answered.
"I thought it was obvious?" He asked, the three give him an annoyed stare before he continued, setting his hands on the table grasping one another. "Sly is very important to me and hopefully to the three of you too. But right now, he is somewhere that while a monumental part in his family's history is currently not in a good spot." The trio continued to look at him with uncertainty, before he sighed and gave them a straight answer. "He is not in the present anymore but has been hurled into the past to a point that defined his family's lineage."
"I've speculated that for the past two weeks." Bentley answered, as the stranger turned his attention to him before he continued. "But without any clue as to where or more accurately what period of time he is in, we have not been able to reach him."
"He is in Ancient Egypt, my intel placing him around the construction of the book his family has carried since then." The figure said precisely, Bentley giving him a disbelief look before he went on. "I told the three of you I have been following you all for a long time."
"That doesn't mean we should trust you, or anything that you've said is true." Answered Carmelita, the others nodding in agreement with her.
For awhile there was silence, the three glaring at the stranger as he sat across contemplating their statement. Finally, he sighed, and he then spoke to the red furred figure on his right.
"Turn on the light." He asked before another light suddenly flashed on, the trio blinded momentarily before they could see the figure in front of them.
He was raccoon, just like Sly Cooper but his fur was darker and had streaks of black in it. It was trimmed, and his hair was curled upward in a fashionable way as he stared at the three of them. He had on a short sleeved black collared shirt, and what they could make out was a belt and dark jeans down below. His tail, ringed like Sly's but thinner because of the fur trim was forked around his chair in a mischievous manner. His eyes were indeed a red-brown, and he gave a grin before he spoke to the trio.
"Does this verify my trust?" He asked, the three shocked at his resemblance to their lost friend before he went on. "My name is Devious Fyron Deviant, and Sly and I are close in a way that right now isn't important."
"That's…that's not possible." Said Bentley, his shock made clear in how he hesitated in speaking the words. "Sly doesn't have any family except us, he lost them when he was younger."
"And we would have known if he had anyone too. He would have told us." Murray added, as the two old friends of Sly gazed at the similar raccoon before Carmelita jumped in, her shock replaced with uncertainty.
"Also, Sly has no other family on file in Interpol. I investigated him myself and there was no evidence of him having other relatives outside of his parents." She said, as the two friends recovered too and nodded in agreement at her comment.
"Unless that evidence was erased because he was in more danger than the three of you realized." Devious answered, his answer giving the others pause before he continued. "My relationship with Sly can be explored another day, one where he is back with us in the present and safe for the time being."
"What do you mean by for the time being?" Questioned Murray, before Devious answered him.
"Well for a long time now, my associates and I have been facing dangers the three of you have been unaware of. For nearly two decades we've kept them at bay, but now they are ready to strike at you four and those you know." Devious then reached for the final folder on his right, before he opened it and continued. "Recently you had one of your friends turn against you. Penelope to be exact."
He then paused on a page before he pulled it out, then he searched some more and grabbed some photos. Putting the folder back down he then laid the paper down first, the group saw he had a profile on her too. Carmelita and Murray glanced at Bentley worried about his reaction, however they were cut off when Devious set down the four of the five photos he had, each showing her in a different part of the world looking concerned or with someone they had never seen.
"We had grown suspicious from her the moment she disappeared after you nearly finished your time machine." Devious said as he continued, eyeing Bentley who looked over the information put down with uncertain eyes. "At first, we thought it had to do with working with Le Paradox, as he promised her a large amount of riches and power for helping him take out Sly Cooper's ancestors. But we believe there was more to it."
Recovering from his initial shock Bentley looked to Devious and questioned him, Carmelita and Murray surprised at how he had gotten over seeing his ex-girlfriend and asked with seemingly little care.
"What do you mean to say, she was working with someone else and Le Paradox?" He asked, before Devious then responded in certainty.
"I'm saying she was using Le Paradox for someone else." He said, the three giving him a look of disbelief before he went on. "Each of these photos was taken when she was missing when she left you Bentley." He looked at the turtle before continuing. "Sorry by the way, you two seemed happy."
"Go on." Was all Bentley said before Devious nodded, and he continued.
He then put down the final photo, and Carmelita, Murray, and Bentley saw Penelope shaking hands with a tall figure. They could only make out the back of his head, but they could tell he was bird, owl by the curve of his head and how his face didn't seem to jut out as much. His feathers were a mix of brown, black, and a touch of white with a small raise on his head they could see was his hair. He was wearing a dark gray coat over a white shirt, only visible from how it stuck out just over the gray coat from the angle of the photo. His pants were a near black, coming down before ending in dark boots that came up midway on his leg. His hands were claws, dark orange with nails that were deep gray in color as he grasped Penelope's hand in agreement with his right.
Looking at the familiar mouse now, Penelope was wearing her yellow jumpsuit from the last time they saw her, however it was tighter to her and not as relaxed as before. She had on a belt, as well as black gloves and shoes though they were longer and reached about midway on her arms and legs. Her red bandana was wrapped around her neck, and her blonde hair still hung down, but it had been cut since the last time they saw her barely reaching past her shoulders. Her glasses were a cross now between the ones she wore when the first met and the orange ones she wore in their last encounter, slighted rounded but with an orange tint to them.
The two were on top of a roof in the night sky, Penelope with an escort of guards while the other stood alone. In the background the trio could see she seemed to be near a port of some kind, somewhere in America judging by the structures and the flags they could see dotted the landscape. Penelope seemed to be smiling, however she was giving a fake one as Bentley remembered when she was caught years ago for being someone she wasn't. They could not make out the other figure's expression however his hands gripped hers firmly, and they assumed that he must have been pleased as well.
Tired of looking at the photo, Bentley turned his head to Devious and asked him what they were wondering from the start of this whole capture.
"But what does this have to do with Sly?" The turtle asked, the dark raccoon then pointing to the figure Penelope was talking to in the photo.
"Does he seem familiar to any of you?" Devious asked them, Carmelita and Bentley looking at him briefly before Murray, still looking at the other photos then spotted something familiar.
"He's the other guy in some of the photos!" The hippo exclaimed, Carmelita and Bentley returning their attention to the other photos.
Sure enough, three of the five had her with the same figure. In one they were on a ship, overlooking what looked like a desert as the ship floated on down the body of water. Another that Bentley recognized was an alley he had seen in a photo he had received in the mail; the photo having had a pink mouse logo on it while in front of the Eiffel Tower. In this one though they could see Penelope with the stranger, she and him looking at the tower him with his arms behind his back and she looking up at him with concern. The final photo was of them at a restaurant, again the figure's face was concealed from where the shot was taken. They were sharing a meal, but in the photo, Penelope looked nervous with her looking around as the other had his arms crossed on the table looking at her.
"Who is he?" Carmelita asked, the three staring at the photos before Devious then snatched up the pieces put forth and stored them back in their original folder. Thrown off by his swiftness the three exclaimed their surprise before Devious answered.
"I have already shared more than I originally planned. If you want to know more, you will need to trust me first." He said, but the trio in front of him then remembered their situation suddenly before Bentley spat first.
"So not only do you claim to be related to Sly, but you have been spying on us for a long time, you know where Sly is, and that someone we once knew has been plotting against us with a mysterious threat you don't want to tell us?" Bentley questioned him, and Devious paused before replying.
"Pretty accurate, yes." He said, however before the three could comment he continued. "But let me be clear. If the three of you want to save Sly, you need to trust me. He's in more danger then any of you think you can protect him from. I thought I could for a long time, but if this person is who I think he is, then Penelope and her betrayal is just the beginning."
"What are you talking about?" Carmelita questioned, as Devious then held up his right hand with the collected folder as the red furred hand took them away. "Who are you and what kind of danger are we in? Tell us!"
The three of them then shook in their restraints, glaring at Devious as they heard footsteps approaching from behind them. Devious got up from his chair, it being taken away before he leaned in toward the trio, his hands resting on the table's surface before he grinned and told them the last words they heard from him.
"I told you my name is Devious Deviant. And I'm Sly's protective older cousin." He said as he grinned at the trio.
Before the trio cried out in shock suddenly the black bags from earlier came on their heads, and they were met with an immediate darkness. They felt a needle pierce the sides of their necks, before they were met with an immediate unconsciousness. So, the three friends of Sly Cooper were hauled away into the darkness by unrecognized arms. All the while Devious watched on, his face unknowingly one of both worry and dread.
Not for what he was doing to Sly's friends, but what he feared will happen to all of them now that he has revealed himself to them.
