Jim stumbled in the crowded bar, crashing into a table. He braced himself before springing up and swinging at the guy who had just punched him. The Enterprise was back on Earth for shore leave and Jim and his friends had decided to go to a bar. Uhura had been helping him back from the bathroom when Jim had accidentally groped his chief communications officer. Some civilian had thought that Jim was molesting her and had clocked him. All of this had led to the current situation where Jim was being supported by Spock while Uhura chewed out the civilian for attacking a Star Fleet captain.
"Spock can you take Jim to where you're staying? He's drunk and I plan to be before the night is out," Bones said to the half Vulcan.
"I fail to see why the Captain cannot return to his own dwelling," Spock responded.
"Jim gets in fights every time he drinks. As his doctor and best friend I would feel more comfortable if you helped him," Bones said before taking a drink. Spock nodded and left the bar with his very drunk captain. Their journey to Spock's Star Fleet provided quarters was filled with Jim trying to make conversation with his mostly silent First Officer.
"You're really a cool guy, Spock. When we first met I thought you were an arrogant ass. I'm sorry about what I said 'bout you not loving your mom. I shouldn't have said it. The older you said that I had to emotionally compromise you. That was the only way I could think of. The old you showed me that we could be close friends," Jim rambled as they entered Spock's room.
Spock's eyebrow twitched when Jim brought up his mother. They never brought that up because it was still a sore spot for both of them. Then Spock registered that Jim had implied he had melded with his future counterpart. An unknown emotion rose up in him and he felt angry. Jim pulled away from Spock and collapsed on the Vulcan's bed drunkenly. He watched as his Captain's eyes dropped closed as the alcohol pulled him toward sleep.
"I love you, Spock," Jim slurred sleepily. This stunned the First Officer. By the time he had mentally composed a reply, the blond human was already asleep.
