Booth: just got a huge load of paper work and probably won't be home for dinner. have you picked up Christine from Max's and headed home yet?
Brennan: I'm just picking up Christine now. Text me again when you're leaving work. Love you.
Booth: love you too
9:20 pm
Booth: ok its taking longer than i thought to sift through all this. not sure if i'll be able to leave anytime soon - maybe within the next two hours? if you're too tired, don't worry about waiting up
Brennan: I don' t mind waiting up Booth. See you soon. Love you
Brennan put down her phone and went upstairs, peeking into Christine's room to see her sleeping before continuing on to their bedroom. After changing into her pajamas, she climbed into bed with a book, realizing how tired she actually was as soon as her head hit the pillow. Yawning and propping up the pillows behind her, she began to read.
A few hours later, Brennan was interrupted by the sound of a door opening. She went to check her phone to see if Booth had texted her saying that he'd left work, only to realize she'd left it downstairs.
"Booth?"
No answer.
Brennan sat up and put her book aside as she watched the doorknob turn. Little fingers pushed the door slowly open. Brennan immediately relaxed as she saw the little head of wispy blonde hair and sleepy eyes peek around the doorway.
"Christine what are you doing awake?"
Brennan opened her arms, and motioned for her 3 year old to join her on the bed.
"Did you have a bad dream?"
Christine nodded and yawned as she climbed into her mother's lap and nestled into her arms. Brennan kissed the top of her daughter's head and picked up her book again, deciding that Christine could stay with her in bed, at least until Booth came home. Only a few minutes later, Christine was fast asleep. Brennan gently tucked her in under the covers beside her, and went downstairs to get her phone and see if Booth was going to come home anytime soon.
There was not update from Booth, so she sent him another message asking when he'd come home. She set down the phone, and picked up her book once again, but didn't make it through a full page before she had dozed off.
Booth had returned to his office after a (long & pointless) meeting about how his floor was upgrading printers soon, only to find a tall stack of paper work to be completed by the next day. After working hard and very late, and missing spending time with his wife and daughter that evening, he started to pack up and leave. On his way home, he checked his phone and realized that he'd missed a text from Bones. He decided against texting while driving, since he was going to home within the next twenty minutes, anyways.
Opening the door to the Mighty Hut, as they affectionately called it, Booth saw that all the lights in the house were turned off, and assumed that Bones had gone to bed already. He quietly set his things down, got a drink of water, and headed upstairs. Down the hall, he saw one of the lights in his bedroom was on.
"Bones you didn't have to wait up so late for -"
He smiled as he opened the door and saw the inhabitants of his bed. Bones with her head on her shoulder, book in hand, fast asleep with Christine cuddled up close next to her, thumb in mouth. He went into the bathroom, washed up for bed and made his way quietly to his sleeping wife. He took her book, placing it on the nightstand as he turned out her light, then made his way around to his side of the bed, and climbed in next to his sleeping daughter, turned out the lights, and fell asleep.
