Chapter 1: A Stranger At the Door
Disclaimer: I don't own HTTYD or any of its characters. I also don't own the Marvel cinematic universe or any of its characters. I won't be including any other MCU characters in this besides Loki, but I decided to put that disclaimer in anyway. Please, no spoilers for Endgame, as I'm going to have to wait for it to come out on Netflix…also, please no spoilers for Infinity War…I haven't seen it yet.
(Becky's POV)
It's late on New Berk. Eret and I have just finished our nightly routine of helping Ruby practice her runes and putting her to bed when we hear a knock at the door.
"Who could that be?" Eret asks. I shrug at my husband. Cautiously, he draws his sword and we go to the door together.
I stay behind Eret for protection as he slowly opens the door, his sword.
There's a man. Brown hair, and I think blue eyes…or maybe green? He's wearing a green tunic that reminds me of the one Hiccup used to wear with brown pants and brown boots.
"What do you want?" Eret asks.
"Please, sir. I mean no ill will to you or your family. I'm here for my…for someone."
Wait a second…
I take a step forward.
"Who are you? Becky, love, stay back. We don't know who this man is or what his intentions are."
"Anthony?"
"Anthony?" Eret repeats.
"But that's impossible. You were…"
"Murdered. I know. Oh, Becky. You're just as beautiful as you were the day you were born. Though your hair is a bit different."
"What? Anthony, if it is truly you, you were there when my son was born. Did I miss something? Did I hallucinate Anthony getting murdered? I'm losing my mind. I have to be losing my mind."
"Love, maybe you should sit down." Eret tells me.
"I'm fine, Eret."
I take another cautious step forward.
"You're not Anthony. So, who are you?" I ask.
"Clever girl. My name is…I am…I am Loki. Of Asgard. And I…am your father."
"Like I'm gonna believe that."
"It's the honest-to-Odin truth. I promise. I'm not tricking you. I've been watching over you for years. In disguise."
"Give us an example." Eret says, wrapping an arm around me.
"I'm a shapeshifter. I was Anthony."
"He was there for me when Eret couldn't be. But that's impossible. Like I said, Anthony was…"
"Murdered. I know. I was him. I was there, watching and helping along with the birth of my grandson…your son. I remember when Eret came onto Drago's – "
"Please. Don't say that name in front of her." Eret says as I gasp and start to shake.
"My apologies. I should have known." Eret leads me to a chair and gently sits me down.
"I remember when Eret came onto his ship. You were in the midst of a contraction and I-"
"You hushed me and –"
"After Eret left, I asked if I could get you anything. Water? Perhaps –"
"Something to eat…I never told anyone those details."
"It was me, Becky. I was the one who helped you through labor with your son."
"Why didn't you -?"
"Make myself known and protect you from him? I couldn't reveal myself to you yet. Not until you were out of his reach forever."
"So you just stood there when that monster was abusing her?" Eret asks.
"It pains me just as much as it pains you, Eret. I couldn't do a thing without revealing my true powers. There was the risk of him hurting you even more. Breaking you more."
"So why now? Why come now?"
"Your mother-in-law suggested I come and make myself known to you."
"You spoke with my mother? You know my mother?" Eret asks, tears brimming in his eyes.
"I do. She misses you so much and she wishes she were here. We bonded over our love for Becky, even though she and Becky never met. Well, except for that one time."
"So…why now?" I ask.
"You're stronger than you've ever been. You have a loving family."
"Wait…what about my birth parents?"
"Your mother misses you every day. And the father you knew…he regrets not telling you the truth, your mother also. And there is the matter of your children up in Valhalla."
"What about them?" Eret asks.
"They're both doing fine. They never age, but they're both beautiful. Your son is fine. Your unborn daughter is fine."
"It – it was a girl?" Eret asks.
"Yes. It was a girl."
"Now about why you're here?"
"Right. I've seen you grow up, both from Valhalla and Midgard. Now, Frank has been doing an excellent job as your father figure over the past several years. But you're not as close as you and the father you knew for 16 years were, are you?"
"No, we're not. Do you expect us to become close, Loki?"
"Not at first. Though I'd like to get to know you, and your friends. Especially that brother and sister of yours. I hear they worship me."
"King and Queen of tricks, those two." Eret says, chuckling.
"And I hear little Ruby is following in their footsteps."
"We've tried stopping her, but she's a stubborn one." I say.
"Takes after her mother." I smack my husband playfully, smirking at him.
"Just saying."
"Do you think…I could meet my granddaughter?"
"Can it wait until morning? It's pretty late."
"Of course."
"You're welcome to stay down here on the couch. It's not much, but…"
"That will do nicely, thank you."
Loki winks at me as Eret and I head upstairs to sleep.
"Goodnight, Loki."
"Goodnight…sweetheart."
~.~
"Honey, we need to be cautious about this. If it really is Loki, he's the god of mischief. He could harm you or Ruby, and I'd never forgive myself if that occurred."
"If he really is my father, he'd never hurt me."
"Didn't you mention something about the guy you knew as your birth father emotionally abusing you?"
"That was nothing compared to what you-know-who put me through."
"Abuse is abuse, my love."
Eret and I go to sleep that night, and my nightmares about you-know-who start up again.
