Ailis POV

The smell of burnt flesh fills the air. I can hear the screams of the priests in the burning monastery. I am home alone because Mother was getting some water. I sit in the corner of the house with my knees pressed against my chest. I just want the giants raiding our village to leave and my mother to come back from the well. I hear the door open and I poke my head around the corner of the bed. One of the giants is in my house. He is super tall and muscular. He has long wavy brown hair and a beard. He examines everything in the kitchen picking up silver spoons and putting them in his pocket. I look down at his hands and find him tightly gripping a huge axe that is dripping with blood. I whimper slightly but put my hand over my mouth so I don't make noise but the giant turns to where I am and starts walking toward me. I hold my breath not knowing what the man will do when he finds me. I hear his footsteps slow. I let out my breath and suddenly feel big hands grab my long red braid. My hands shoot up to try to get him to release my hair. He smiles mischievously at me and says "Look what we have here," he had a thick unfamiliar accent.

He lets go of my hair but quickly picks me up and throws me over his shoulder like I weighed five pounds. I kicked and screamed in protest but his grip was strong. He carried me out of my house and on to the loud, chaotic street. One of the giants spoke to the man who was carrying me in a language I didn't understand. I felt the man underneath me slow and then I was slung onto a big wooden ship. I screamed at my captor "Where are you taking me?!"He laughed at my anger. He responded coolly "Home."

Freezing water rushed all over me. I sat up straight in my cot. Rollo looked down at me with tired eyes, "Get started on your chores." I groaned and lay back on my soaking cot. I suddenly felt rough hands wrap around my ankles and rips me off of my cot. I started thrashing around trying to get out of his hold. He grabbed me by my hair, opened the door, and threw me outside. The crisp air hits me and I shiver. I look down at my ankle and realize the bell that he kept around my ankle so he could hear me was gone. I immediately took the opportunity to escape and ran in the direction of the dense forest next to the house.

Rollo's POV

I slammed the door behind my extremely stubborn slave. I began to walk back to bed where I could have some kind of peaceful sleep without Ailis screaming from her nightmares. My foot hit something solid. I looked down and saw the bell that I constantly kept on Ailis so she couldn't run away without me hearing her. I realize she would take the first chance she had to escape. Without any hesitation I darted out the door and ran into the forest, following the path of smashed grass that she left carelessly.
