Author´s note:
Hallo @ all.
This is a poem that was mainly inspired by two things: Tolkien´s
description of the Rohirrims´ arrival on the Pelennor fields and sencondly:
the movies. Denethor´s fear and hopelessness when he looks over the rim of
the city and spots this giant army. So the first part is written from
Denethor´s point of view, the sencond one is the arrival of Rohan as a
towerguard sees it. I didn´t intend him to be someone special, he´s just
one out of many guards, so in a way he represents all the others. Okay
then, I´ll stop talking now and hope you´ll enjoy this one.

Shadow and Hope
Denethor:
O look at thy city so proud and so strong!
Soon your walls will be taken, it will not last long.
O city of kings of the long fallen West.
You will face now your last and most terrible test
Do you deem yourself strong with thy walls made of stone?
Thou art not, Pride of Gondor! Now you are alone.
Not the walls of this city and not seven gates
Will hold back the black flood, what comes now are our fates.
And the armies of Men soon will perish and then
Not a whisper remains of you, weak mortal Men!
Oh guardsman on the tower, thine eyes see thy doom,
That approaches so quickly and you´ll face it soon.
So why, guardsman why do you still stay and defend?
Your beloved will be slain by the enemies hand!
All is hopeless, oh guardsman, why don´t you put down
This useless sword of yours? You will fall! You´re alone!
Better go, leave these walls, shut your mind, go to sleep!
Hope to never awake and do weep, guardsman! Weep!
Weep for all of your children whose innocent eyes
Will cry bitterest tears for the sun will not rise.
Oh! No more will sun´s light touch the ground of thy land.
Guardsman, see! All is hopeless! Why try to defend?
....
....
Guardsman:
But behold! There is light on the darkening sky!
Light of hope, see my Lord! Light of hope! I won´t fly!
Hear the horns! Hear the sweet sound above all the fear
That the enemies seek, hear the horns my Lord! Hear!
Oh lo! There in the bliss of the swift rising sun,
I can see all those riders, I see Thengels son.
And his armour it sparkels and fair is his face.
No my lord this will not be the end of our days!
See, our hopes are fulfilled, behold! Rohan is there!
All the pride of these horsemen, hope comes from despair!
And the sound of their horns fills my yet hopeless mind,
While the sun seeks their faces. Awake! Hope we´ll find.
And see, oh me lord, see the pride of the West!
We will pass it, this last and this terrible test.
See the King of the Mark, like a god of old days
He stands up in his stirrups! It´s not fear that stays!
It is hope that arrived on swift hoofs on this day,
Thou had lost all thy hope, Lord! But still hope will stay!
And now all the riders cheer up to the sky
See, they´re turning their blades! Gondor´s sons! Stay don´t fly!
Yeah the doom is near, but not the doom of our kin.
Rohan´s come with its riders and fear´s growing thin!
Oh and now I can see that the host rushes forth
with the golden sulight on the back of each horse!
I can hear the men sing with their voices so fair
And so loud that it fills al the entire air!
Like the army of gods they now seem all to me!
They have come to defend us, so flee, black flood! Flee!
In the ashes are flames and in shadow still hope
We deemed ourselves alone with foes too many to cope.
But with rising of day as with rising of sun
We found back what was lost, and now our foes run,
And they die under hoofs of wrath and blinding light
While we soldiers of Gondor shake off evil night
And run, aid those who saved us with joy in our minds.
It is hard still to hope, but hope always one finds!
