Two children. Playing in a garden. Playing, that's all. Playing a game. A game about a statue, in the corner of a garden. It's in an ordinary house, in an ordinary town, in an ordinary country. Britain, if you care to know. A stone woman, hiding her eyes. But if you look closer, she's not, not really. Her eyes are in shadow, but if you look at her, properly, the eyes are there. Just hidden. And for some reason, it scares people. It's in the end of the garden where it gets really dark. Where the children dare each other. All they have to do is go right up to the statue and look at her. If you're really brave you can touch her. But no-one does that. They just...don't. It's too scary. And you don't sit near the windows.
Because if you're near the windows, you sometimes think she's moved. You reason with yourself that she can't move. It's a statue; it's stuck where it is. It's stone. But when you blink, when you turn your back, it looks like it's moved. Just a bit. Maybe her hands have twitched a bit, or that the material of her dress has shifted. Or maybe, her head's turned a bit. So you move. To the other side of the room. There, that's better. You're fine now. Everything's normal. But it's still a bit creepy. All the other statues are fine, yeah, they don't move, but neither does that one. Although... ugh! It can't move, it doesn't move, and it never has and never will. Ever.
Late at night, a crowd of drunks jump through the back of the fence. You moan in your sleep, then turn over and go back to sleep. Because they've gone. Either that or they've finally shut up. But it was quick, and you don't notice because you're sleepy, but the angel looks like it's moved. Again.
The next day it seems to creep you out a bit more. Then your dog digs up a bone, a human bone. And none of your mates go near it after they hear what happened last night, and we all go and play in the street. No annoying senses to say that anythings moved, you just play angels. The boys make ugly faces, the girls act like they're celestial with wings and grace. Halloween comes, and after two houses they come to drunk Angelo's, and the girls run off squealing with the boys just behind them. They squeeze through a gap in a hedge, trip over a few loose planks and try and avoid the nettles to get home, and play in the garden for a while. They turn to playing dares again. There's the usual, and then it starts on angel dares. The boys pelt sweet wrappers at her, and the funny one of the girls pulls off her trilby and puts it on the angels head and dances around madly. Then the boys and girls troop inside, and think it's all right, isn't it? It's just a statue, and it's just a game!
This was inspired by an actual experience of mine, as a friend has the latter angel in her garden! Scared me for weeks. The whole thing actually happened, except for the dares and Halloween being on the same night.
