Disclaimer: I'd love to own Lost but, I just can't. :(

Summary: Shannon thinks about Boone as she listens to his most played song on his iPod. Rated T for depressing story line.

Shadow of the Day

I close both locks below the window
I close both blinds and turn away
Sometimes solutions aren't so simple
Sometimes good bye's the only way

As the plane hit turbulence, Shannon winced then turned to the window. The wing was gone. Oxygen masks dropped she let go of Boone's hand quickly to secure it to her face then returned her hand to Boone. He had his on and he gave her a look she had never seen before. She hugged him not knowing what was coming next. The plane broke apart and she felt it fall. She squeezed it even harder and shut her eyes. She heard screaming but ignored it. She was already in tears. The next thing she knew she was lying in a pile of sand. Her eyes shot open and she looked around to see people crying and screaming. She shouted for Boone, but realized that he was probably dead. She stopped moving and considered it. She then went hysterical. This had to be a dream plane crashes never happen. Not in the middle of a 14 hour flight! She dropped back to the sand a safe distance from the wreckage. Boone ran to her and wrapped her up in a big hug. She continued to weep in his arms.

And the sun will set for you
The sun will set for you
And the shadow of the day
Will embrace the world in grey
And the sun will set for you

Boone's Funeral was something she had been dreading for the past 12 hours. She wasn't looking forward to (probably) breaking down in front of everyone. He was her brother and she did feel like killing him sometimes but still, he didn't deserve to die in the pain that he went through. A small tear rolled down her cheek as she thought about what Jack had said were his last words. "Tell Shannon I…." She knew exactly what came next. "Love her." As they buried him the sun began to set in the distance. She silently wept as she said her last goodbyes. "Goodbye Boone. I'm sorry I let you be my shadow. I'm sorry I never let the sun come out. I love you too Boone. I love you too." she announced out loudly. She then placed the sunflower Sun had given her from the garden on his grave. "Bye big-brother, I'll miss you."

In cards and flowers on your window
Your friends all plead for you to stay
Sometimes beginnings aren't so simple
Sometimes good bye's the only way

Shannon spent the next few days in her tent thinking of what she could have done if she was there. She could have saved his life. If she had only been there he would be alive and she would not have to sit here and listen to one song over and over again. She hit the back button as the song ended once again. The song reminded her of the terrible things she had done to him. She decided to visit him again. She walked slowly to his grave and saw how the sunflower drooped and looked drained of color. Just like him. Sayid appeared a not long after the first tear fell. "He's gone, Shannon. There was nothing you could do."

"No. It's… all… my… fault. I did this to him." She managed to choke through sobs.

Even if you were there, it would change nothing." he silently walked away knowing she would just argue in response.

Shannon sang the song that she knew would never get out of her head. His favorite. "And the sun will set for you. The sun will set for you. And the shadow of the day. Will embrace the world in grey. And the sun will set for you. And the shadow of the day. Will embrace the world in grey. And the sun will set for you. And the shadow of the day. Will embrace the world in grey. And the sun will set for you".
