The numbers on the screen stared back at her, willing her to just hit the call button already. Just do it Rachel, she thought, the worst that could happen is that things get awkward and she hangs up. Although it could ruin the tentative relationship you already have or it could build on that connection and make it much stronger. Her inner monologue raged on. Finally, Rachel decided there was nothing that she could really lose. She pressed the call button. The phone rang once, twice, three times, just as she had convinced herself it was a bad idea someone answered.
"Hello."
"Hello?"
"Rachel is that you? Is something wrong? Did you get the part? Rachel. Hello."
"Hi, um Shelby"
"Yes, Rachel what's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong I called to tell you Happy Mother's Day. I know you're my mother and not my mom but I still thought you would appreciate it especially because Beth is not old enough to-"
"Rachel, Rachel, honey thank you it was very thoughtful of you to call and I do appreciate it. Listen do you have any plans tonight?"
"Um no, no I don't. Kurt is still in Lima spending time with Carol and Santana is showing her mother the sights around the city. Everyone else had plans except me."
"Why don't you come over to my place, you Beth and I can stay in, watch movies and have a girl's night. How does that sound?"
"It sounds great. I'll be right over."
"Alright I'll see you in a bit, bye I love you."
"Goodbye…I love you too"
As she hung up the phone Rachel exhaled loudly, that went really well. In fact she found her self thinking that maybe things were truly looking up between Shelby and her. She would finally have that mother/daughter connection she always wanted and craved.
