"Hey, Yugi! Wait up!" called Tea Gardner as she hurried down the street. Yugi stopped and turned.
"Hi, Tea. What's going on?" he asked.
"I heard Joey's dueling Torch Pheonix !"
"Who?"
"I don't know, but he's got Joey down to 500 lifepoints!"
"No way! He's got to be some kind of genius!"
"C'mon! Let's hurry up and get there." They hurried down the street together.
Chapter 1
ENTER THE PHEONIX
"Well, Mr. Wheeler, it looks like your Thousand Dragon was ineffective against my Gemini Elf coupled with my Mask of Weakness. Your monster was destroyed and you're down to 200 lifepoints." The speaker began laughing hysterically. He was Torch Pheonix, a champion Duel Monsters player. He was a tall man, 6' and a deep brown, not completely black but not white either. He wasn't known anywhere outside of his school. Torch had just turned 14, and for his birthday had recieved from a distant relative who owned a game store a case of Labryinth of Nightmare cards.
"I can't lose. I just can't! I won't!" Joey Wheeler replied. "Come on, deck, don't fail me now! Yes!" Joey quickly summoned Bazoo the Soul- Eater.
"Nice try, Joey. I'll just activate my Quick-play card Offerings to the Doomed! It destroys any monster on the field."
"Nooo!" Joey cried as Bazoo vanished from the field.
"And now for the moment you've all been waiting for! I sacrifice my Gemini Elf in order to bring forth Summoned Skull! Attack now! Lightning Strike attack!" Ding! "You've lost, Joey Wheeler."
"Joey! Are you okay?" Yugi asked.
Torch jumped down from the dueling platform. "Yugi Muto. Nice to see you. How's Solomon doing?"
"How do you know my grandfather?!"
"He's a distant relative. He started me playing Duel Monsters and gave me my first card."
"Oh yeah? What was it?"
"He gave me a box of cards and told me to pick one. I closed my eyes and reached in and bam! Out came a Summoned Skull. My Summoned Skull is to me what the Dark Magician is to you. Remember, sometimes the card-"
"-chooses the duelist."
"There ya got it. I've been using it for a while now. Ya see, you gots to play with what ya got, and Summoned Skull's what I got. So I use it all the time. I am the Summoned Skull Masta!
"I've heard of a 'Summoned Skull Masta'. It was in 'Duelist Weekly'. He was making a big stir over in Europe during Battle City. And now he's here and a relative."
"That be off the hizzy!"
"What?"
"Cool."
"Oh."

Yugi and Torch walked down the street together. "So how long have you been playing?" Yugi asked.
"About a year now. It pulled me in like light to a black hole. You know, Yugi, I've been wanting a duel with you for a while now."
"Perhaps you'll get your chance. We're about to have a little tournament. The winner gets a Barrel Dragon."
"The winner will be me, Yugi. And by the way, Yami doesn't stand a chance against me."
Yugi's mouth dropped open. "How do you know about Yami ?!"
"I know more than you think.""
Chapter 2
REBORN FROM THE FLAMES, THE PHEONIX LIVES ON
Torch walked into the room of the tournament, and all eyes were on him. As he stepped up to the platform to duel Joey once more, everyone began cheering. For him. It amused Torch to no end. "All right, Joey, let's roll."
"I'll start by summoning Swordsman of Landstar in attack mode. I'll lay one card face-down and end my turn." Joey slapped a card down.
"All right then, I summon Gemini Elf in attack mode. And I attach the equip card Sword of Deep-Seated to increase it's attack points to 2400. Attack now!" Ding! Joey's lifepoints dropped to 2100.
