The scents of the forest filled young Anastyn's nose as she woke to the morning. She yawned. It was the last day of her journey home from the village beyond the forest. Life was peaceful as she went on her way, her short sword on her belt and a quiver full of arrows on her back.
Only an hour had passed in the morning and the sky was still lighting up to greet the new day. Though, to her, it still seemed darker than it should.
'What is going on?' she thought. 'The sky is never this dark at this hour of the morn.'
That was when she smelled the smoke. A vision of fire filled her mind. The only civilization within the forest was her home, Aurora. Something was amiss. Anastyn looked up to the sky. It wasn't dark storm clouds that filled the sky. It was clouds of smoke coming from her village just beyond her reach.
Anastyn dashed off through the forest, passing by countless trees, until the village was just barely in sight. She made it to the edge of the gates but she was too late.
Fire blared into the sky, houses and bodies all covered in flames. The ground was scorched with black and stained with blood. Anastyn ran into the village, yelling hopelessly for her mother and father.
"Mother!" she yelled. "Father!"
Nothing. All silence except the crackling of the fire and the small moans of living bodies coated in flames. As she ran through the main pathway, searching for her home, the tracks of blood only continued. Her heart began to race to the point that complete adrenaline and worry filled her mind. She ran faster than she thought her feet could carry her.
Once more, she repeated her yells for her mother and father. Finally she came upon her own hut, though the fire blazed higher and higher into the sky. Anastyn stood back a bit, then ran to ram her left shoulder into the locked door. The door was burning already and set her own arm aflame. She screamed in pain, the fire eating into her flesh. For a short time she kept trying to put it out. Eventually she couldn't feel much of it, the fire having numbed her entire arm.
A second time she rams the door and successfully knocks it down. On the wooden floor laid her mother, burning alive. She looked up very briefly at her fearful daughter. "Run..." she murmured. "Run, my dear Ana..."
Ana couldn't believe what was in front of her. Her mother dying in front of her and her father nowhere to be seen. She carefully moved, trying to get a step closer and pull her mother from the blaze. Though, just as she did, the ceiling collapsed in. Anastyn jumped back quickly, just barely missing the collapse and falling out the door.
She was too late.
Young Ana cried and ran out of the village, heading back in the direction of the human village for help. She ran as long as her legs could carry her before her legs gave out beneath her in exhaustion and pain.
...
"Ana! Wake up!" a voice yelled. She jolted awake and upright instantly, a cold cloth falling into her lap. "Everything is okay. You're alright, Ana." Illthilior moved the cloth back to her forehead.
Ana put a hand to her chest, catching her breath. She had been having a nightmare. "Ill... I'm sorry..."
"You were having a nightmare, but you're alright now." He gives a small smile, putting his hand to her forehead. "Your fever is breaking at last."
Ana sits in silence. The dream seemed so real, and yet it was as he said. It was a nightmare. It wasn't the first time, however, that her past had come back to haunt her.
