Chapter One:

The sunlight filled the car as I sat in the beige leather seat of my social workers BMW. I stared out the window watching the fields pass by, everything was unfamiliar, but I was used to that feeling.

"Veronica, we are nearly there" Janet, as we went around the roundabout, I rolled my eyes and twirled my hair in my hands, Janet had noted once that it was a sign of nervousness. I had scoffed at that; my hair was the only thing I liked. It was long, slightly curly and black. We turned around a corner and turned into a drive way. "This is Ashdene Ridge" Janet said.

"Am I supposed to be impressed?" I asked, glaring at her. Janet rolled her eyes and jumped out the car, she went around to the boot, where my suitcase and my black plastic bags were. I came over and grabbed my blue suitcase before walking towards the door. As I stepped up the steps, it opened and revealed a man with light brown hair that was turning grey and warm brown eyes.

"You must be…" He said trying to remember my name.

"Veronica" I said, I looked him up and down, if he couldn't be bothered to remember my name, this was going to be a laugh.

"Yes, yes Veronica, come in. Hello Janet" He said smiling at my social worker.

"Hello Mike, sorry about the early arrival…could we talk in your office?" Janet asked. Veronica rolled her eyes.

"Of course, Veronica how about you go meet the kids, with May-Li" Mike said, appearing next to him was a woman with long straight black hair and warm blue eyes.

"I'm May-Li" She said with a smiled.

"I gathered" I said, I dropped my suitcase at the bottom of the stairs and followed her through to the living room. It was a comfortable room, with lots of pillows and blankets. I bit my lip as I saw all the other kids staring at my expectantly.

"Guys, this is Veronica. She's going to be staying with us, why don't you introduce yourselves?" May-Li said.

"Where's she gonna sleep?" A girl asked.

"Oh… Veronica's going to be sharing with you Tee, you're the same age" May-Li quickly said, the girl relaxed.

"I'm Carmen" She said.

"And I'm Tee, you'll be sharing my room" Another girl said, she had long dark blonde hair and brown eyes that looked a little perplexed. She looked nice, I had decided.

"I'm Harry"

"Tyler"

"Jody"

"Floss"

"Mo"

"Bailey"

"Ryan"

"Kazima"

"I'm Billie and this is Toni"

"I'm Finn"

"And I'm Sasha" said the last girl, she was also the smallest. Veronica nodded.

"I'm Veronica, Veronica Beaker and you better not forget it" She said with a smirk on her face. "Tee? Do you want to show me our room, we can sort out where my stuff is going to go?" Tee nodded and Veronica followed her upstairs.

"I didn't get a chance to read much of Veronica's file before you came" Mike admitted, as Janet followed him into the office. Janet nodded.

"I am sorry we arrived early, but her foster parents wouldn't keep her any longer. Veronica is a difficult child" Janet said. Mike nodded.

"Do you want to talk me through her life?" Mike asked.

"Sure, she was abandoned by her mother when she was sixth months, the neighbours reported hearing the baby crying, since then her mother has been in and out of her life. Veronica isn't a bad child, but she has low self-esteem from her mother being in and out of her life. All the details can be found in her file" Janet said. Mike nodded and picked up the file, he stared to leaf through it before stopping.

"Her mother is Carly Beaker?" Mike suddenly asked.

"Yeah, do you know her?" Janet asked.

"Um…I looked after a child with the same mother…I think"
