Prologue
Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter
A/N: Just so everyone knows, this story will be set in more recent times, for the fact that I can have anyone using a iPod in 1995 now can I? For a timeline, Harry Potter was born in 1990, James, Lily, Sirius, and Remus were born in 1970. Tonks was born in 1980. Hope no one is confused.
Many years, before the creation of Azkaban prison was even a thought, witches and wizards charged of heinous crimes were taken into the Department of Mysterious, down below The Ministry of Magic. There, they were judges by to opposing forces, the witches and wizards of the Wizengomet, and the Veil of Judgment.
If found guilty by a jury of their peers, they were thrown through the veil, where a higher, unknown power would judge the body, soul, mind and magic of the charged. In three days, the veil will hold the convicted, and if found innocent, will send a soft blue light, so all in attendance, will see the verdict, and remove the innocent by means of a simple summoning charm.
If guilty, the convicted will destroyed by the veil, body, spirit and magic, never to wreck havoc in our world again.
However, the wizarding world adapted to a new humane method of containing the guilty, the Azkaban prison. The prison was built on any island, twenty miles from mainlands in all direction, with a weather charm for constant stormy weather. Azkaban was guarded with Dementors, instilling the notion helplessness to those imprisoned. The prison was virtually impenetrable, and impossible to break out of. It was decided that the veil of Judgment was no longer needed to judge the guilty. The practice was abandoned in 1812.
As the years passed, records of the veil were lost, and soon the veil became forgotten, locked in a chamber in the Department of Mysteries, untouched until 2005, when one, Sirius Black was stunned by Bellatrix LeStrange, and fell through. After the Battle at the Ministry, no one returned to the chamber.
No one laid witness to the soft blue light that emitted from the veil.
