Daisies

Rose was sleeping as she was dying. She had left consciousness and drifted into a sleep-like state.

I didn't know that she was dying. At least, not until I found myself walking upon her dream.

We were standing in an infinite field of daisies. The sun was gleaming in the sky, yet I wasn't burning. It was my dream, so we played by my rules.

I left Rose as she was, wanting to see what she looked like in the real world, not just in the dream. I was shocked when I saw her lying in the grass, cuts and bruises painted across her toned body.

Her breath was nothing more than a quiet whisper. If I hadn't been looking closely, she would have been mistaken for dead.

"Adrian," she gasped, her eyes, framed by thick black lashes, fluttering open.

I didn't realize I was crying until a teardrop plopped on her cheek as I stood over her. "Shh," I whispered soothingly. "Rest."

"I don't want to rest. I'm not done," she told me, her words like fragments.

"Not done with what, Little Dhampir?" I asked her, a sad smile gracing my features.

A weak attempt of a smile appeared on her lips as she tried to reciprocate mine. She opened her mouth to say something, but that was her last breath. Her eyes slid closed.

I knew better than to call her name. I knew better than to ask the sky to bring her back to me. I stroked her hair, and woke up.
