Author's Note: Just a little thing I wrote. I had trouble posting this earlier, sorry about that. I hope you guys like it!
The title is from the song 'Brighter than Sunshine' by Aqualung.
'You were the last person I thought would hate me'
'I don't hate you, I love you'
'And yet you think I deserve to die'
'But not as a punishment'
They say that when a person is about to die, they can see their life's regrets flashing before their eyes before they close for one last time. It is fitting then, that his heroin addled mind would show him the only person who had ever believed that beneath his sarcasm and the harsh exterior lay a human being, as desperate for love and acceptance as anyone else.
He thinks it was a mistake not to unravel the beautiful enigma that she was. He regrets brushing away her affections like an irksome fly. He regrets not begging her to stay when she left the hospital in tears, blaming him for her broken marriage. He regrets not getting to know her when he still had the chance.
As he waits for death to finally claim him, he cannot help but think of her, of what could have been had he embraced his feelings for her the way she had. He wouldn't be lying on the floor in a building about to be engulfed in a volley of flames, for instance. His vision smiles at him slightly and quietly lies down next to him.
He looks at her and remembers the date from hell, where he had accused her of only wanting him because he was damaged. He prided himself on always being right, but when it comes to her, he's sure of nothing. Even on his deathbed, he realises he knows next to nothing about her. She was the one puzzle that he never solved, the one that got away.
As he gazes into the gray eyes that look at him with barely concealed adoration, he regrets being a coward and letting Allison Cameron go away from his life.
The orange flames envelop the wooden framework of the house like a lover's caress and her face is the last thing he sees before his eyes close.
