Takes place after the Voyager relaunch novel The Farther Shore, no major spoilers though.

"Herbal tea, warm."

Chakotay waited several seconds for the replicator's customary hum but it never came. "Herbal tea," he repeated, frowning at the machine.

The replicator finally activated, but what appeared was not tea.

Absentmindedly, Voyager's new Captain took a sip and quickly spluttered it out. This was coffee. Black, hot coffee, if he wasn't mistaken. "What the...? Computer, is this replicator malfunctioning?"

Silence.

"Computer...?"

A new mug appeared, this time with the correct beverage.

Frowning again, Chakotay put the coffee back into the replicator and picked up the tea, carefully tasting some. Yes, this was what he'd asked for.

Shaking his head, he returned to the pile of PADDs on the desk. There were some disadvantages to the Captain's Chair. Paperwork first and foremost.

Glancing up at the computer screen on the desk for a moment, he realized that the screen was blank except for a line of writing. Chakotay blinked at it, wondering if he needed more sleep.

-Apologies, Captain. Old habits die hard.-

A moment later, another phrase replaced it.

-Even for starships.-

The writing winked out after several moments, returning to what he'd previously been working on. Chakotay shook his head in amazement. Yes, he definitely needed more sleep.
