"But Uncle Thorin, I wanna be friends with the Elves!" Little Kili declared, interrupting Thorin's story.
Dis had encouraged Thorin to explain their families history to her sons Fili and Kili. Being older and having a long attention span, Fili had taken in every detail of Thorin's story. Kili's focus, on the other hand, had faded in and out. At first his brother's behavior had irritated Fili, but once Thorin had begun to talk about Elves (and how much he hated them) Fili hoped that his brother would be too distracted with his own thoughts to tell their Uncle his opinion. Unfortunately the word 'Elves' had caught Kili's attention.
"You what?" Thorin asked, appalled at his nephew's words.
"I wanna be friend's with the Elves," Kili repeated. For the moment, Thorin seemed unable to form words, so Fili took this moment to chide his brother.
"You don't want to befriend Elves," he informed him. "They're silly and they don't have beards."
"I think they're pretty!" Kili wore a huge grin on his face.
At this point Thorin had marched out of the room to tell Dis exactly what her son had just said to him and ask her exactly how such impractical ideas had found their way into his small head.
"You don't know what they look like," Fili said to his brother.
"Yes I do," Kili said. "Balin showed me pictures."
Fili groaned and Kili continued to grin.
"Promise you will not talk about Elves when Uncle Thorin comes back," Fili pleaded and Kili reluctantly agreed.
When Thorin did come back Dis had followed him. He wore a stern expression, but she seemed like she was trying very hard not to laugh. She of course knew of her sons positive opinion of Elves, but assumed that it was and idea that he would grow out of in a few years.
"Could we hear the rest of the story?" Fili asked the adults.
After some hesitation, Thorin did continue the story, and this time was not interrupted by either of the brothers. Once again, Fili intently listen to every word and Kili half listened with as much interest as he could. However, when Thorin came to the end of his story and was preparing to leave Kili spoke up again.
"When I'm King-Under-The-Mountain, I'm going to be friends with the Elves." In Kili's defense, he had intended for only his brother to hear this, but had spoken a little too loudly.
"You're not going to be King-Under-The-Mountain, I am," Fili corrected him. "I'm older."
"Kili," this time it was Thorin who spoke. "Why do you want to be friends with Elves?"
"Because-"
Fili jabbed his brother in the ribs with his elbow before he could talk himself into a deeper hole. "He doesn't," Fili said. "He was making a joke. Right Kili?"
Kili hesitated for a moment, looking back from Fili to Thorin. "Yes," he said slowly, then added quickly. "I was joking. It was completely a joke. I make jokes all the time!"
Thorin seemed unconvinced, but let Dis lead him to the door. Fili and Kili followed a few steps behind them. As Dis was saying biding Thorin farewell, Kili turned to Fili and said:
"When I grow up I'm going to marry an Elf."
