The day was cruelly short. Too soon, a car pulls up and it is time for him to go.
"Don't forget me," he says, lips wobbling.
She shakes her head vehemently, curls nearly whipping him in the face. "Never!" Her hands are fisted and she looks like she is trying so hard not to cry, but there are tears in her eyes, and, really, it isn't fair. "I couldn't even if I tried."
Of course, he doesn't think before he steps closer to her, because he doesn't believe he'll ever get to see her again and no one has ever cried over him and he's had a crush on her for as long as he can remember and he is trying to be strong but he's only eleven and they do it in all the movies, so he kisses her.
It only lasts a couple seconds before they jerk apart, red-faced, but when he is sitting in the backseat of the car and off to another state, and she is still standing in the doorway, watching until he disappears, they both know it is something they won't forget.
