Harry had been sick for two days now. Coughing and crying, a baby rested uneasily on his mother's shoulders, warm with fever. His mother looked quite out of sorts as she glanced at her three year old baby, wondering why she didn't have a list, or some kind of solution to sickness. Muggle remedies wouldn't work, and her husband, a healer, had no idea what the problem was. She was exhausted, just like Harry, both of their brilliant jade eyes swimming with tears. Their hair, hers red and his a mass of jet black, both stuck out at odd ends as they paced endlessly around the house.
Unable to cure her baby, she felt like a failure. And Lily Potter did not fail at anything. James had gone to work and left her alone with the illness that was taking on a life of its own inside their home. Harry had been bathed, fed, sent to the loo, and rocked (which had always worked as an infant) him; still, he remained miserable.
"Dragon
tales and the "water is wide"
Pirate's sail and lost
boys fly"
She began to sing in a shaky voice, more for her sanity as she didn't really suspect singing would work.
"Fish
bite moonbeams every night
And I love you"
Harry quieted, looking at Lily with an odd expression, his nose still bright red.
"Godspeed,
little man
Sweet dreams, little man"
His tiny frame relaxed, wrapping his arms around her tighter, still looking at her curiously.
"Oh
my love will fly to you each night on angels wings
Godspeed
Sweet
dreams
The
rocket racer's all tuckered out
Superman's in pajamas on the
couch
Goodnight moon, we'll find the mouse
And I love you"
His eyes started to close, though his gaze stayed firm with her eyes. Smiling soothingly, she brought a hand up to his head, gently guiding it back down to her shoulder.
"Godspeed,
little man
Sweet dreams, little man
Oh my love will fly to you
each night on angels wings
Godspeed
Sweet dreams"
There was a sound of a door opening from inside their kitchen. Slowly walking to it, singing still, she found James shaking water out of his hair from the storm outside. Hearing her voice, he glanced up confused. She smiled at him, and made an excited gesture to the drowsy toddler. His jaw dropped, giving her the thumbs up.
"God
bless mommy and match box cars
God bless dad and thanks for the
stars
God hears "Amen," wherever we are
And I love
you"
She turned out of their kitchen, making a motion for James to follow her. They all went up the stairs, the youngest fast asleep finally, a quiet calm taking place again as James opened Harry's bedroom door, also pulling back the Quidditch comforter on his bed.
"Godspeed,
little man
Sweet dreams, little man
Oh my love will fly to
you each night on angels wings
Godspeed
Godspeed
Godspeed
Sweet
dreams"
She put him down, and kissed him softly on the forehead, before retreating.
This song is "Godspeed (Sweet Dreams)" written by Radney Foster. Dunno release year, but I don't think it matters much as the fic's not about the song, more about the scene. Read and review, then check out my other fic's, please!
