I wasn't much into shooter games. I have a brother who constantly tries to get me to play Halo and Call of Duty, but to no avail. It wasn't until Splatoon 2 was announced I got hyped. I didn't own the first but I had planned to buy the switch so I thought, why not. After buying the switch, I went to pick up my pre-ordered copy of the game. I was so excited that when I got home I started playing it in my dinning room, since my little sister was playing Skylanders and refused to get off.
As soon as I plugged the game in, I booted it up. The screen said,"Update Needed." Confused I clicked ok, I messed up big time! As soon as the supposed update was done the game started normally. I started creating my character. Something was off, the options for the eyes were not varied like the wiki showed. The options were: Red, Black, Yellow, Green, and white. All the options were one's I knew existed but, a bunch of other colors were missing. I chose red, the color I had planned to get any way. I continued through the creation of my inkling boy and the tutorial played through normally.
It wasn't until I met with Marie things got interesting. Her opening dialog was normal but, she was not. She looked paler than normal, her eyes faded as if she was dying of old age. But, that couldn't be right, sure Marie looked like a grandma but she's only 19, why does she look ill. I didn't question it, I was in handheld mode after all, though I was only holding the joy-cons.
Things got even weirder when I realized that, octovalley's sky was red. I know that octarians were evil, but come on Nintendo. The red sky, in my opinion, was a bit overkill. When I loaded into the first fight against octarians, their ink wasn't purple, it was red. Red ink? I always thought Nintendo avoided red ink because it would be to graphic, keep in mind this was before the Ketchup versus mayo splatfest. The red ink did more damage to me than any other color ink. Marie's text bubble appeared on the screen saying, "Be careful, octarian ink is poisonous!" I say, "yeah, thanks for the tip captain obvious!"
It took me a few days, but I finally got to Octovio, The main villain. I noticed that Callie, she wasn't there. Heck where she was supposed to be, was a splatter of red ink. "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH MY COUSIN, YOU BITCH!" Marie said. I was stunned to see that on screen, this is a kid friendly game after all. "MUHAHAHAHAAA!" Octovio cackled, "YOU THINK I WOULD LET HER LIVE AFTER WHAT YOU TWO SHIT HAD DONE TO ME!" I was surprised this even existed. "what did you do?!" Sheldon, a character I refused to mention because of he's an annoyance, said in a cowardly way. "ISN'T IT OBVIOUS, I KILLED HER. AND NOW… I'M GOING TO KILL YOU!" Octovio said, pulling out a shotgun and shooting at Marie. She was then shown covered in red ink.
It was shown with Octovio laughing his head off for what felt like an hour. Suddenly my switch shut off. I tried to turn it back on. It was refusing. I finally pulled the cartridge out, only then it was able to turn on. I checked the eShop and I had gotten a $50 refund and a letter in my email. It said the following:
Dear FlubberNad(my user name),
It appears you have fallen victim of a hackers forced update. We are sorry for any inconvenience and graphic displays this may have shown in our game. We have completely terminated the update and gave you a $50 refund in your eShop account. Hope you're not in any way scarred from the game
Thanks very much,
Nintendo of America
I don't know who made this hack of an update but I know one thing… I'm never letting my game get an immediate update after getting it on the release day again.
