Fence
In order to get to Hikari, one must first climb the fence.
The fence was rough, immeasurably tall, and full of splinters. It guarded Hikari constantly, allowing very few to pass. None were allowed easy passage. The fence was her brother, Taichi.
Yamato hated the fence; but he liked Taichi. He also liked Hikari. And so, with dread in his heart, he set out to conquer the fence. He tried four times and failed three.
The first time was the worst. Taichi had simply stared at him before kicking him out. He didn't get a chance to explain why, like the other attempters had. Instead, he got a door slammed in his face and a bruised nose for days to come.
The second time, he managed to squeeze a few reasons in before the fence shook him free and left him there by himself. The worst part was, Hikari had been there for the last few minutes and, by the look on her face, thought he was talking about Sora.
The third time the fence allowed him to almost reach the top. But then Taichi decided, at the last minute, that he wasn't good enough for Hikari. And Taichi wouldn't give the reason why.
So Yamato decided to try something else. He went to Hikari instead and tried to secure a friendship with her, with the fence watching him cautiously the entire time. This went on for several weeks before Yamato began noticing Hikari blushing every time he spoke to her. He also noticed that he was growing more and more fond of her than before.
So he went to climb the fence again. This time, Taichi was willing to listen, and, after much pacing and grumbling, let Yamato scramble over the top and to the other side. To Hikari.
Ten years later, Yamato slipped his hand into Hikari's and smiled. The long and treacherous climb had been worth it.
