Sam watched John as he stood on the balcony. Every few moments he would run his hand over his face wiping away the tears that had collected. Rodney moved to stand with Sam and smiled as she looked over at him.

"That was their balcony" Rodney said softly "Not officially of course but somehow they always ended up there"

"I always knew they were more than friends," Sam said softly

"They were so wonderfully in love. Did you know he promised to always protect her?"

"He told you this?"

"No I over heard. After the first years storm they were standing out there watching the sunset, and John said he would do anything in his power to keep her safe"

"He must feel like he failed her in the biggest way"

"John didn't want to bring her back. I thought he was being selfish. But watching him now, I know he just wanted peace for her"

"Is he going to be ok?"

"I don't know. I think so. I hope so. Maybe in time he'll be able to live again"

Rodney smiled as he walked away. Sam followed a short while later. John looked up at the sky and smiled at the stars. So many nights he and Elizabeth spent watching the stars.

"I miss you Elizabeth. More than ever" John said softly "Why did you have to leave. Why did you stand by that window? Come on 'Lizabeth, I need you. I need you to be here with me telling me I'm being stupid, to tell me not to go on suicide missions. I love you. You have to come back"

John waited a few more moments hoping for an answer. He sighed and wiped away his tears one last time before going to his quarters. It was empty without her in Atlantis. He fell into a dreamless sleep and for the first time in a long while, he dreaded waking up in a world without her.
