That scent.

Just the faintest smell, hanging defiantly in the air between the falling drops. It was only one among hundreds he could detect, but still noticeable.

A sharp screech ripped through the silence, followed by a quick series of quieter, guttural noises, sounding almost like a throaty and wet bark of a dog.

The warning signal.

The three heard it, that much was obvious, as they broke into a dead run, looking over their shoulders, waiting for the hunter to come into view and allow them to shoot.

More were swarming over, attracted to the source of the noise, wide eyes searching for the source of the main Hunter's disturbance.

They looked like humans, more so than the other infected, yet the way they moved was in the manner of a monkey, lithe and graceful, almost, in their primitive way.

Blue jeans scraped loosely across the building's rooftops as they moved, until they finally spotted the figures moving through the darkness.

A heard jerked towards the sky, a louder sound bursting forth from a bloody throat.

It was almost as if they were… playing… with their prey. Their actions verged on sadistic- letting the humans know good and well they were in hot pursuit, taunting them with freedom before closing in.

They knew they would win, in time. Though this horde might be killed at their guns, but eventually, one would get another lucky hit. One of the original four had died through their journeys, and the others would follow.

They knew no fear of death, no hesitation as they struck, making them all the

deadlier.

The original Hunter spun around, black and grey stripes on his hoodie nothing but a blur as he pounced into the air with another ear shattering screech, followed by a score of other infected.

They were almost wolf like as they landed with hard thumps on the ground, cornering and circling around the three immunes.

A gunshot blast echoed in the night.

A single, long scream echoed in the infected city, that didn't stop until after ten agonizing seconds of being skinned alive and disemboweled.

The hunt had begun.
