I could tell Bucky was nervous the moment we stepped out of the elevator. It was all over him – the way his eyes darted around the room, checking exits; the way his brow drew together in concentration; the way his whole body tensed up as if preparing for a fight. Gently, I pulled his head down.

"Relax, this is all for you." I looked into his eyes. He looked right back at me. At the only one he could trust.

"Okay." Bucky pulled away a short distance, just far enough for personal space, just close enough for me to help if he got overwhelmed.

You know, you're much more confident in a fight, I thought into his mind.

In a fight, I know what to do. Most of my memories are of killing techniques, he thought back.

"Ready?"

"Yeah."

I pushed open the door. All our friends and recent enemies. A chorus of greeting rang out. Bucky shifted from foot to foot as Cap came up.

"Hey." Cap had that wistful look in his eye.

"Hi. Oh, and thanks for not letting Stark kill me." Bucky fiddled with his gloves.

"No problem. After all, I remember you, even if you don't."

Bucky half-grinned, but it faded as soon as he looked behind me.

"Hello." Even from his voice I could tell Tony wanted to punch both of us.

"You didn't have to arrange this if you didn't want us here, Stark." I spat his name like poison.

"Cap convinced me that Bucky needs it. Obviously, you need it too, even if you don't want it."

"Only because of you and your ego."

"Good thing there's a whole separate wing of the house for you two. Everything you need. Two bedrooms, a kitchen, bathroom, shooting range, gym, living room. If you don't want to see me you don't have to see me."

"Perfect." It really was perfect. Before we knew it, it was nighttime. We settled into our adjacent bedrooms. Whoever woke up screaming first wouldn't have to wait too long.

"Night." Bucky looked tired.

"Night." I knew I looked the same.

"Neither of us is going to sleep, are we?" It was stupid of me to ask.

"Nope." We went our separate ways to endure the night's torture.
