Perfect Match

"You can do this, Regulus," Barty assured him, even as Regulus glared darkly, rolling his wand between his hands.

They'd been working for hours and Regulus was getting more irritable the more failed attempts he had. He shook his head before rubbing at his temple tiredly.

"Look, I appreciate that you want to help me Barty, but -"

He was cut off as lips covered his own, a hand resting on his hip as the other came to caress his neck. Surprised, he froze for a moment, but as Barty started to pull back, Regulus raised his hand to rest against Barty's cheek, drawing him close once more.

It was indescribable. Of course, Regulus had been kissed before, but this, this was new and different and so, so good. Barty tasted like dark chocolate, and coffee, and something so unique that it could only be described as Barty.

"What," he rasped as they parted, breathless. "What was that?"

"You need a happy memory for the Patronus to work, Reg. Clearly you didn't have any happy enough, but try again."

"Yeah?"

"Go ahead."

Regulus thought about the feelings the kiss had invoked, the elation and the lust and the hope and the 'oh, Merlin, finally,' and firmly intoned, "Expecto Patronum."

The pale mist he'd been able to produce already hovered for a moment before it manifested itself into an animal. He'd done it.

Barty gasped, his eyes on the silver fox between them.

Regulus lost his concentration at the sound, the fox dissipating into the air.

"What's wrong?" he asked.

"Cast it again," Barty requested, pulling his own wand from his pocket.

"What? Why?"

"Please."

As requested, Regulus concentrated once more, his fox appearing moments later. He watched with confusion as Barty closed his eyes and cast the spell himself, only for understanding to dawn when a second, slightly smaller fox appeared.

Barty and Reg watched with wide eyes as their patroni rubbed against each other, the glow melding them together as they lit up the room.

"Barty?"

"I know," Barty replied, taking Regulus' hand, squeezing tightly. "We match."

Regulus smiled. "Perfectly."
