A/N: A quick one-shot. Nothing more.

Bum-bump. Bum-bump.

"I will not surrender!" Link screamed, his voice echoing in the darkness of the eerily still forest, "I am me! You have no power over me!"

Bum-bump. Bum-bump.

"Link, Link," the darkness whispered around him, "Don't you know? I am you too."

Bum-bump. Bum-bump.

"No!" Link shouted, whirling the Master Sword throughout the air, "I deny you, just like I denied your master! I am not slave to you!"

Bum-bump. Bum-bump.

"Poor little Link," the darkness mocked him, " You are a hero, Link. The people love you. They don't know about your dark side, do they?"

Bum-bump. Bum-bump.

"They always expect you to solve all their problems, all their pain. They believe that you are more than them, that you are more than human. How little they know, eh, Link?"

Bum-bump. Bum-bump.

"I, I-" Link began, but the darkness cut him off with a cold laugh.

"You what?" the darkness snarled, "Do you claim to be more than human, that you transcend the worms that you save? You are as human as anyone you have ever saved!"

Bum-bump. Bum-bump.

When Link said nothing, the darkness continued in its taunt. "Have you ever wondered why you strive so hard to do good?"

Bum-bump. Bum-bump.

"To help those who can't help themselves," Link said automatically, feeling his resolve strengthen once more.

Bum-bump. Bum-bump.

"Really," the darkness said, "You and I both know the real reason that you do good. You are afraid of what will happen should you stray from the right-hand path. You are afraid of yourself. You know of the great darkness inside of you. In fact, I am the embodiment of your dark side. You're smarter than Ganondorf, you could easily gain the power he had with little chance of a backlash to yourself."

Bum-bump. Bum-bump.

"What about the people of Hyrule?" the darkness whispered seductively, "You say you fear for their safety. All those things that you tell them they should do to ensure their own safety, and they refuse to do it. If you had the power that I could help you gain, they would obey you. It is you duty, after all."

Bum-bump. Bum-bump.

"Why are you doing this?" Link screamed, tears streaming down his face, "Why won't you leave me be?"

Bum-bump. Bum-bump.

"Because I am you, and, therefore, want what's best for us. I am the part of you that wants to damn the consequences, and take what you want. I am you in the deepest, most hidden part. I am the evil, as you say, that resides in your soul."

Bum-bump. Bum-bump.

Link fell to the soft, mossy ground on his knees and clamped his hands to his ears, desperately trying to block the sounds that emanated from the pitch black of his surroundings.

I am you, the voice whispered inside his head.

Bum-bump. Bum-bump.

"I give up!" Link howled, "Please, just stop! What do you want me to do?"

Just give in, it whispered inside his head again.

And Link did. As he raised his head from its rest on the cool ground, his eyes now the color of crimson, no more heartbeats came forth.
