It surprises me.
It isn't like him at all.
We've always had an understanding.
An understanding that doesn't need demonstrative gestures to prove its mettle.
But we are alone, and this isn't exactly a run-of-the-mill bad day.
It's more like the worst hell I can imagine.
I'm powerless to change it.
I know he's upset, too.
Still, he surprises me, in word and action.
All I can do is look into those sweet, sad eyes that I came to love long ago and utter a single word that is both wholly inadequate and more than enough for the moment.
