What is Oz? It's a place every one knows, yet no one has ever seen. It's a place filled with the wonders that the real world lacks. Most say that it's nothing more than a children's story, but there are some that know otherwise.
It's true when they said that Oz isn't real, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Oz is a land where those who are lost can find who they are, and find their way home. It's a dreamworld that is visited by only those who need it. It shows you reflections of your regrets and of people that you care about. It gives you the chance to change who you are, for better or worse.
This is what both Dorothy Gale and Oscar Diggs went through. Although they went on different adventures, and learned different lessons. Everyone that they met in Oz taught them something. Once they had learned what they were sent there to learn, it was time for them to wake up and return to their lives. This had been easy for Dorothy, and, when she awoke, she was overjoyed to be back home, with her loved ones. Oscar, however, didn't want to wake up.
In Oz, Oscar had the happiness that he had never found in Kansas. He had friends and somewhat of a family. He had a land full of people who believed in him and thought that he was a hero. And he had Glinda. Back in Kansas, he had lost the only girl that he had truly loved, but in Oz they were together.
Without even realizing it, he made it impossible for himself to leave this dream world. Unlike Dorothy, his soul depended on this world. He couldn't live in it, but he would die without it. He would never truly be free.
In the end he did leave, after years of believing that he belonged in Oz. He hadn't wanted to, but he knew that he needed to help Dorothy get home. In the end, though, he had only succeeded in sending himself, and his balloon, back to the real world.
Oz is a dangerous place, it can make or break you. Maybe if Oscar had known that he were only dreaming, he would have wanted to return to the real world. Then again, sometimes a lie that draws a smile can be easier to live with than a truth that draws a tear.
Oz was meant to save people from spending their lives making mistakes, but trying to change fate is a tricky task; sometimes, your outcome can end up worse than what you started out with.
This was slightly influenced by Inception, you know the whole "this world it not real" thing.
