A Shepherd's Search
There once was a shepherd
Who had many sheep
He loved them like he would his own children
He cared for them his whole life.
Everyday was hard work
Every night he slept
with one eye and
Two ears open.
He was ready for predators
His staff and rod at hand
He went over His fields
To make sure poisonous plants were absent.
He checked over each sheep
One by one
Making sure each was healthy
And free of pests.
He counted them daily
Checking that no harm
Had come to them
That none were laying helpless on their backs.
Then one day
He counted one less
Double checking his work
He'd found he'd lost an ewe.
This particular sheep
Was stubborn and greedy,
Fat and often had fleas.
To an outsider, her loss would've seemed a gain.
But not the the Shepherd.
He rushed to every field
Every place he knew
Searching with all his might.
His energy poured into the task
It lasted for weeks
Dirt covered him
Hunger gnawed at his stomach.
But he kept searching.
Until the day
He found the lost sheep.
Rejoicing, he carried it home,
So glad his precious was with him once more.
When he arrived to his house
A huge party was thrown
Everyone ecstatic
That the lost had been found.
This may seem just a tale
You may have heard before
But if we were the lost sheep
And the LORD the Shepherd,
Would we be found?
AN: If you enjoyed this poem, (or even if you didn't) I highly suggest reading, "A Shepherd looks at Psalm 23," by Phillip Keller. It is fantastic and was part of my inspiration for this poem.
