Disclaimer: I don't own Sherlock or the characters.

A/N: Hello everyone! This is my first fanfic in quite a while and since it's my first Sherlock fanfic ever I'm aware that the characters may be (very) OOC. But I hope that you will like it anyway and please leave a review if you can spare a few second.

Before I Die

"John. There's something I need to tell you before… Before I leave." Before I die. This was it. Sherlock knew he wouldn't get to see his best friend again. "I beg you, please don't say anything until I've stopped talking."

"What is this about?

"When I first met you I had no idea how much I would eventually need you. Time and time again you saved me and for that I am forever grateful. I guess somewhere along the way something happened and when I finally returned after faking my death I realized what it was. I William Sherlock Scott Holmes had fallen for you John Hamish Watson. I should have said something as soon as I realized it, but by then you had Mary. Actually you had just married her by the time I realized what my feelings where. I never meant to tell you, but this could be the last time I ever get to see you…" It is the last time I'll see you. "…and I just… I can't leave without letting you know." I can't leave without knowing if there was ever a chance that we could have ended up together if things had been different.

"Sherlock I…" John stopped himself, unsure of what to say. "Before the fall I used to dream about you telling me that. I used to hope that you would ask me out. I didn't understand it, but I was in love with you. But then you… You died and well, I met Mary. Part of me will always love you, but nothing can ever happen between us. Not as long as Mary's in the picture." He let out a sigh and wrapped his arms around the detective. "I'm sorry, Sherlock. I'm sorry."

Sherlock put his arms around John and buried his head in his neck as tears made their way down his face. "I know it hurts, but thing will get easier." John said. "I promise." Of course things will get easier when I'm dead.

"Sherlock. The flight is waiting. You need to step on it now." Mycroft's said as he walked up to the two men. They let go of each other and Sherlock quickly wiped away the tears. "Goodbye John." Was the last thing he said before stepping on the flight. With a sigh he sat down in one of the seats and just waited for the flight to take him away from there. He wasn't sure if telling John had been the best decision after all, but at least he wouldn't have to spend the last few months alive wondering if he could have had a chance.

The End
