Author's Note: Deathly Hallows spoilers. This is just a short drabble I wrote for Severus. I've been wracking my brain for a plot that would do Severus Snape justice, and this is the best that I can come up with. I know it's not even close, but I did my best. Please review and tell me what you think?
Meant to Be
No one had ever known, except Dumbledore, and perhaps (he suspected) James Potter had seen something in his eyes once or twice that had eluded to it. Lily hadn't even had a clue, he knew. That is what confused him the most. She, of all people, had known him capable of that sort of thing, had known the softer side of him. Why couldn't she see? He had tossed and turned, worried so many sleepless nights that she had seen, unsure about what he would do if she approached him about it. But he knew now that he would never have been so lucky. She wasn't meant to see it. She wasn't meant to remain friends with him. That might have unraveled the fabric that had been so intricately woven to bring him here to this one moment in time.
He was never meant to be that happy, he concluded. Lily Evans was meant to marry James Potter, not for the sole purpose of making him miserable like he had always thought, but to bring Harry Potter into the world, to save it. He realized this now, as he looked up into Harry's eyes—Lily's eyes, and inhaled, his throat shaking. Some things were meant to be. His love for this boy's mother had been one of those things. It had kept him from turning his soul over to the Dark Lord. It had kept him feeling, kept him as whole as possible. It had kept him alive so that he could fulfill this one last act in honor of the woman he loved. This was the pinnacle of his life. As he exhaled his final breath, he conceded to the fact that some things were just meant to be, and he silently thanked the fates that he had known Lily Evans—for she had saved him. And that was meant to be.
