LORD, I HOPE THIS WILL BE A GOOD DAY

By Rhiannon

Disclaimer: The story is mine ... the characters (alas) are not. Yeah, I totally stole the title from a song by Lee Ann Womack... it fit...

Summary: This takes place right after Abbey speaks with the 'gas passer' and when Jed goes into surgery in season opener. (response to Deanna's challenge)

Abbey walked through the doors of the ER room. She paused for a moment to look at the man on the gurney in front of her. The ER attendants had long since striped him of his clothes and thrown a hospital gown on him. She could see the oxygen tubes had already been placed around his ears and she was slightly relieved to see that they had given him prongs instead of a mask.

Suddenly, as if he had been told she was there, he looked up and met her dark eyes with his blue ones, "Hey."

Abbey moved to his side and leaned down as far as she could. "Hey, yourself." She replied, brushing his bangs out of his face.

"Have you seen Zoey?" Jed Bartlet asked his wife.

Abbey nodded, fiddling with the collar of his gown, "Yeah, she's fine. I left her with Leo."

"She booted all over her car."

"I almost did too."

Jed brought his hand up to her arm and held it tightly, "I'm sorry."

Abbey sat on the edge of the gurney and leaned her face down so that it was barely an inch away from his, "It's okay."

"You mad?"

"As hell," she could feel herself begin to tear up. "I should have known that you'd be the one that would duck into a bullet instead of out of the way."

"Is that a thinly veiled cut down?"

"No, it's a cut down." She laughed. "You're a klutz Babe."

"Yeah well, I do try to liven things up once in a while." He tried to laugh. Then his eyes grew serious, "Abbey..."

"Hmm?"

"Did you talk to?"

She nodded her head, "Yeah ... he knows. Everything is going to be fine. Don't worry."

"I'll be unconscious Honey, I won't be able to worry," Jed replied. "You on the other hand..."

"Will know that you are in capable hands and that you will be just fine."

Abbey finished for him.

"As you pace the halls," he added.

Abbey touched his face with her hand, "I love you."

"I love you," he pulled her toward him until her mouth was a hairs breath away from his. "And I am going to be fine."

She looked intently in his eyes, "I know." She kissed him deeply and rested her forehead against his when the kiss broke. "Okay."

He nodded, "Okay."

All of a sudden a doctor appeared at Abbey's side, "Dr. Bartlet?"

"Yes?" she answered, not taking her eyes away from his.

"We need to take the President into surgery now."

Abbey nodded and looked up at the doctor, "Okay." She bent down and kissed Jed once more, "Okay."

"Okay." He replied.

She rose from his side, "I'll see you when you wake up."

"I love you, Abigail."

She ran her fingers through his hair once more before he was rolled away from her, "I love you." She raised a hand to her mouth and pressed her fingers against her lips as she watched him being rolled away. For a moment, she closed her eyes and allowed the panic to surface.

Then she opened her eyes, brushed the tears away and walked back into the waiting room. 'Lord, I hope this will be a good day...' she thought to herself.

There were other people that needed her and that would keep her busy until she saw Jed again.
