John couldn't remember much of what had happened. There had been water and drowning and lots and lots of confusion. Then there had been waking up and Sherlock's lips and coughing and spluttering and Sherlock's lips again.

He was shaking and quivering and he wasn't quite sure whether it was from the ice cold water or from the lingering kiss.

"Never do that again," Sherlock murmured, breath warm against John's cheek, eyes closed and clothes as sopping wet as John's.

John could only nod his head, a silent promise, because his brain still wasn't working.

Then Sherlock's hand was curling up and into the doctor's hair, finger's entwining with the longer strands John had been meaning to get cut yet had never found the time to do so. He didn't mind so much now.

"You're not allowed to leave me," the young detective informed him, selfish and possessive, but John couldn't find it within himself to argue. "Anyone else… but not you. Not like this."

He met Sherlock's gaze, his chest tightening at the turmoil of emotion in those blue depths, before closing his eyes and smiling, allowing Sherlock to draw him gently closer. "I'm not going anywhere."

Because he knew, in those moments he had been lost within the water, he wasn't the only one who forgot how to breathe.
