Silent?
No.
Not for the first time, Aranya closed her eyes, covered her long, upright pointed ears, and gritted her teeth.
Screaming.
It was all she ever seemed to hear anymore these days. The SCREAMING of elves, dying, in agony. Silvermoon in flames was seared into her mind forever, and Teldrassil blazed that wound back open afresh.
She could hear her Thalassian kin fighting, falling, running in terror. The wails of despair as she fought beside her king and watched him be cut down - watched Anasterian Sunstrider die - as her homeland was overrun with grotesque walking dead things and their city set aflame.
She could hear the agony of the night elves in the far-off World Tree, their shock and soul-rending dismay as they writhed in the grips of the cruelest death. Their tears and screams as their loved ones and their own limbs were licked away into sickening smoke.
She heard her own voice yell out, "BLIGHT! GET BACK!" Then her comrades of the Horde yelling in surprise and running back towards Lordaeron Keep to avoid the rain of foulness their warchief unleashed, while others coughed and choked on their screams, their lungs burning as they fell…
… To be re-animated, by the erstwhile defender of her kingdom, in no difference from the very same bastard who had destroyed it. Destroyed her.
Screaming, nothing but screaming.
And the loudest voice that Aranya couldn't stop hearing, the one that COULD NOT be silenced for anything, was her own. Screaming and wailing every minute of her every day now, though she smiled, and fought, and lived, and loved.
Inside, her soul screamed loudest of all.
A/N - This was based off a prompt address to Aranya from an entity beyond, as she is the "Voice" of a secret order called the Perished, who look after and protect the innocent souls of the no longer living and battle the souls of the evil and unworthy dead.
