Missing in Factors
Maura Isles just came off a case. It was terrible. There was a huge amount of physical damage to the victim, but there were more emotional factors as well. The attacker came after her specifically. She didn't mean for it to happen. He just attacked her in her office. She walked the perp out and went to the Homicide division in the Boston area. She assumed that Jane was right next to her on the way back to the lab, or at least behind her. When she got back, she looked around and there was no Jane. She began to assume the worst. She turned to the room outside the lab. No Jane.
She searched throughout the entire offices. No, no, no, she thought, Jane no. Jane! She became under the impression that Jane was missing. That she was taken. She continued her search. Her secretary began talking to someone. She couldn't hear the conversation they were having. She was too focused; too intent on finding her best friend. She heard shoes shuffle to where she was and the soft clack of paper cups on the surface. "Hey!" said the familiar voice, "what're you doing?"
Maura looked up. She saw Jane standing there. "I brought you coffee." She gestured to the cups of untouched coffee right beside her.
Maura grabbed the chair she tossed away so she could stand up without looking like a fool. She just completely turned the lab, the lab offices, and the lobby upside down just to find Jane. A bright flush rose to her cheeks.
Jane looked around the room. She saw the disaster that ran through it. The disaster that was Maura. That confused her. She moved closer to Maura. She wanted to know what was wrong, what happened.
Maura returned Jane's gaze with one of anger. She shoved Jane in the chest as hard as she could. "Damn you, Jane Rizzoli!" she yelled while Jane clutched her chest in pain. "Where the hell were you?" she asked in agony.
Jane looked confused. "I turned into a coffee shop to get us coffee, Maura." She looked at the upset Maura who was now in tears. She couldn't help what she was feeling at this moment in time. This somewhat frightened Jane. She was afraid of what Maura might do next.
Maura just stared down at the mess she made. She turned her gaze back to Jane, who had a surprised and a little bit of a distressed expression on her face. Maura's face fell to great depths. She didn't know what happened, but felt how horrible it was. Her eyes filled with tears of relief and embarrassment. She didn't mean to do any of this. "I'm sorry Jane," she whispered. An arm enclosed her eyes. Jane placed an arm around her shoulder. "The recent case took so much out of me, so when you didn't come back with me, I immediately assumed the worst and I… I…" Jane cut her off. Maura seemed so distressed right now.
"It's alright," cooed Jane, "I just didn't expect that kind of reaction from you." She didn't add "From a simple coffee run." She thought that would be too cruel.
Maura didn't know what else Jane wanted to say, and didn't care in the slightest. She turned into Jane's arms. They stood there, two grown women, one crying like a child. No one seemed to stare. Or care, for that matter. It was just the curse of leaving your best friend behind in so many wrong factors
