A Moment More
Each shallow rasping breath seemed weaker than the one before, raising a horrible dread within her. John's battle for life continued with each passing second, Teyla's stomach tied into knots with her inability to do more and she fought to hide the tears building in her eyes. His skin had turned waxy. His conditioned worsened to the point he could no longer shrug it off with witty comments or joke about shooting McKay when they got back to Atlantis. Now his eyes, barely open, were glazing over.
Where were they? She scanned the area, frantically hoping to see them, but it was in vain. They were alone and John was fading fast. What was taking them so long? In truth, Teyla knew no more than twenty minutes could have passed since they'd left in order to get help. Still, it felt like a life time ago.
"Teyla?" He muttered, not looking at her.
"Yes, John?" She forced a smile on to her lips, though he took no note. Ignoring her aching arms she forced herself to press down harder in an effort to slow the never-ending bleeding from the gunshot wound in John's chest. No longer could the cloth hold the precious blood that flood out with each pump of his heart. The warm blood oozed between her fingers and down her arms taking John's life with each drop.
"McKay and Ronon?" He whispered his head leaning against the tree's trunk.
"They are fine John. They will be back with help any minute. Just hang on." He didn't say anything and once again Teyla looked around hoping to see that the others were coming.
"God...this isn't what…"
"Don't talk John, you need to save your strength," She tried to smile as tears started to slide down her face, blurring her vision. As his eyes drifted shut Teyla grew sharply alarmed, "John, John!" A panic like a tidal wave hit her as she feared he would not wake again, but to her relief his eyes slid slightly opened.
"Dont...worry I'm..."
"I know."
Distant voices sounded from the trees, giving her hope. "John they're almost here," Teyla smiled, yelling, "Over here!" Though she had no doubt they already knew.
"Teyla, I love..." She felt his body go limp and a horror rose in her, like nothing she had ever felt.
"John?" She cried. "John!" Through her hand she could feel the blood slowing as his heart did. "John!" She begged in vain. "Oh, god no!" Nothing. Teyla knew he was gone. Tear rain down her check as she cried, "John I love you too."
Ronon was first to emerge from the forest, the other not far behind. They started in shock. Teyla was lying in John's limp arms, sobbing, her face buried into his shoulder. Her hair and cloth were streaked with his blood and near by a blood-filled rag lay discarded on the ground.
"Oh god" The bag slipped from Carson grasp as he knew what had not been spoken. Carson move to Teyla side, checking shortly for a pulse, but shock his head, no, to the others. He reached down placing a gentle hand on Teyla shaking shoulders.
"He gone." He whispered to her. It took them ten minutes to pull her from his body, as she constantly muttered through sobs, "Only a moment more…"
