Adam listened as the rain hit his umbrella in rhythm. The wheels of his skateboard hit the cracks in the road right in beat with the rhythm of the raindrops. To him, there was no other sound in the world right now besides this one. He listened in pure bliss to the beat and music of nature as he rolled along the sidewalk.
Adam passed a few people who were walking home from Degrassi. Most had umbrellas and those who didn't were huddled underneath some else's. He didn't blame them. There was supposedly a zero percent chance of rain today. That turned out so well.
He wasn't more than a minute away from school when he saw a lonesome person walking in the rain. She was holding herself as she shivered from the cold rain. Her long hair was wet but not quite drenched in water yet. She had no coat. She had no umbrella. She was withstanding the rain alone.
He stopped his skateboard and got off just behind her. Adam ran to catch up with her.
"Woah! Hey! Here," he said pushing his umbrella over her and handing her the handle. The girl turned to him confused. They stopped walking.
"What?" she asked.
"Take this," Adam referred to the umbrella they were both currently under. "You need it more than I do." He flashed a bright smile at her.
"Huh?" she threw him a puzzled look in return.
"You're walking home in the rain," he pointed out.
"So are you," she said back. He smiled.
"Not exactly," he lifted his skateboard. She looked away slightly embarrassed. "I'm Adam, by the way," he said reaching a hand out to her.
"Katie," the girl replied taking his hand and briefly shaking it.
Silence. Neither spoke as they both enjoyed the quiet sound of the pitter-patter of the rain.
"You can keep that," Adam pointed to the umbrella, now in Katie's hand, disrupting the silence. "Or if you don't want it you can throw it away. I really don't care." He said shrugging playfully.
"Um, well thanks," Katie said stifling a giggle at his subtle joke.
He nodded his head and looked away. Adam walked no more than three steps from Katie before he heard her again.
"Hey," she called over the sound of rain. "What is this?" she asked referring to the conversation as a whole. Adam chuckled and gave her a pleasant smile once again.
"Just think of it as…" he paused, "a act of random kindness. From one stranger, to another."
