Song in Summary: Flames by V.A.S.T.

Author's Note: Another picure prompt from LiveJournal. This one was a still frame of a lighter being struck. This was what came to me last night while I was taking a much-too-long bath. I really like it, actually, and I haven't written in Renesmee's point of view before. Be gentle, please. And review! -Delta

Sparks in the Dark

The spark of the small Bic lighter was all I could see in the darkness.

Suddenly a candle lit and blanketed everything in a rich, warm glow. The tree fronds were dancing happily in the September air, still warm from the quickly passing summer. Gnarled tree trunks were flickering strangely but it gave to the ambiance.

Especially when I looked at Jacob.

There was a special smile on his face, the one he saved for me, but there was another glint of some emotion I wasn't as familiar with. Not until he opened his mouth and stuttered out the words.

"Happy Eighteenth Birthday, Nessie."

I couldn't help but smile at that, feeling the blush creep up the back of my neck and plant itself as a pool of warmth beneath my cheeks. This was why he snuck in and brought me out here, into his forest. And this was why both of our hearts were beating much too fast.

I looked up and into his eyes, as black as his name, and then down at the cupcake in his hand. A small birthday candle was flickering on the top, throwing shadows across his beautiful skin.

"Make a wish."

I licked my lips in preparation but my mouth was going much too dry. His hand reached up and pushed a stray curl behind my ear, his fingers caressing the skin there. I couldn't think, could barely breathe.

'I wish that Jacob would kiss me.'

It was the same wish that I'd had last year but I hoped this one would finally count. That was just too much hope too early. This was most certainly the real thing. I felt it in my chest, the pit of my stomach, the tips of my fingers. I felt it, no…him, everywhere.

And then, with one small intake of breath, I blew out the candle and took away almost every bit of light in that small clearing.

I didn't feel anything, didn't hear anything but the beating of my own heart. I began to breathe much too fast, eyes still adjusting to the dark.

"Jacob?"

My voice broke slightly as I swallowed, until finally, I felt his warm, soft breath on my cheek.

"Tell me what you wished for."

I swallowed, finally seeing his face inches from mine. His breath was delicious, warm like cinnamon and wild like the earth that was beneath us. My head was suddenly swimming.

"I- I can't," I swallowed dryly, "If I tell you it won't come true."

The words came out in a breath, and I saw him smile.

"I promise your wish will come true." I bit my lip and felt his hand curl around the back of my neck, his lips leaning towards my ear, "Please, tell me."

I trembled from the hot breath that sent chills over the sides of my body, this was much more than I had expected from him. And I couldn't help but comply to his words.

"I wished that you would kiss me," I licked my lips again, "Just like I did last year."

There was a sadness in his eyes, but it was taken over quickly, before his lips brushed softly against mine.

"Happy Birthday, my love."

Then his lips molded to mine, so softly my heart clenched, and I let the world drown in the never ending darkness.
