Pre-Space flight Human history

This is a summary of the human timeline. I will try to avoid large information dumps in this but will expand upon it if it is wanted or needed.

Humans develop faster, and due to the influence of earlier culture's are less diverse in Europe. Europeans all speak Latin, a language that was passed on by the Roman empire and later by other empires to both North and South America. (AN: I will be writing in English.) Religion is unpopular due to better scientific understanding. American colonists are not neglected by Britain and other European empires meaning there are no rebellions, instead peacefully evolving into self-ruled commonwealths.

Whilst Europe and Asia are still different, there is less imperialism allowing for better relations between the continents. (AN: I don't know enough about Asia to be writing about it.)

These cultural differences result in human technology and nuclear weapons being developed faster by 1900, creating a mutually assured destruction before something resembling WW1 can take place. Without WW1, the events that lead to Communist rebellions and the rise of Nazism don't take place. There is no damage caused by the world wars, and no ideology differences to result in the cold war. Peace is maintained.

Over the 19th century, European empires including Britain, France, Germany, Russia and Spain are merged due to political/economic integration. This Alliance is seen as the beginning of a creation of a new order and is joined by the nations of North and South America. They agree to a federal system, allowing self-rule on many internal issues but share a common military and foreign policy.

Over the 20th Century, Asian countries begin joining the Alliance. African countries are, due to decreased public support in the Alliance, decolonised and later invited (subtly threatened) into gaining the alliance.

By the start of the 21st century, Human's are united as a species. Despite this, Military's are maintained to deter rebellion's and to maintain the status quo.

Initially during the 21 century the equality gap is reduced, yet the earth's population increase's significantly.

During the later stages of the 21st century, as the population increases, the gap between the rich and poor grows as more and more people are forced to live in overcrowded slums.

To prevent unrest, significant increases are made to the police forces and opposition parties become restricted, banning them from advocating their countries leaving the Alliance to take care of themselves. The world becomes more politically integrated to prevent problems and to try and find a solution.

Years 2140-2400

Colonization of the Moon/ Discovery of Mass Effect Physics

Human space exploration began in earnest in the late 21th century. In 2140, Armstrong Outpost in Shackleton Crater on Luna was founded as humanity's first extra-terrestrial settlement.

In 2143, a collapsed research station was found that was not of human origins. While religions tried to assimilate this discovery into their doctrine, a global rush began to decipher the petabytes of data from the outpost. Humanity had discovered Mass effect.

After discovering information on a mass relay orbiting Pluto, it was decided they would delay opening it until they have finished colonising the Sol system, to avoid spreading themselves thin in the case of alien aggression. Data recovered on the moon implied that proved Protheans had studied Cro-Magnon humans millennia ago.

(AN: Anyone else think it weird that the Protheans didn't just watch from the moon)

After studying the Sol system over the last century, the Alliance knew there were worlds that could be suitable for colonisation. Now this would be a realistic goal.

An early source of helium-3, Luna is now mined for materials used in space habitat construction. Dozen's of major domed cities have been built around the moon's craters. The population by 2400 is 860 million.

Colonisation-Core worlds

Colonization of Mars

Mars is a simple world compared to Earth. Large oceans dominate half the worlds surface with large, arid land masses covering the rest. Despite this it is comfortably habitable in costal regions, with conditions similar to that of Earth's.

With the help of Mass effect, Humans set foot on Mars only 3 years later.

In 2148, human explorers on Mars uncovered a long-ruined Prothean research post, with a surviving data cache. Whilst most of the data was lost, the findings also revealed that the Sol system was being used as an experiment in terraforming, and before they arrived, the planet was a barren desert with large dust storms and a weak atmosphere, and low magnetic field. What the Protheans did to solve these issues however is uncertain.

By 2400, the population of mars had reached approximately 6.6 billion people, mostly living in cities along the coastal regions. Many colonists originated from the slums that were growing on Earth in order to escape the growing poverty caused by overpopulation. The world is the industrial capital of the Alliance, with construction, mining and shipbuilding being the largest employers. There is a large military presence on Mars.

Colonization of Venus

Explorers sent by the alliance arrived on Venus in 2155, shortly after the Alliance has established itself on Mar's. Upon arrival they discovered a world that had, like Mars, been terraformed by the Protheans. Instead of a volcanic world with a thick carbon atmosphere the Prothean archives describe, they found the world to be mildly humid, with thick vegetation and open plains. Like Earth, most of the surface is ocean.

With the increasing human population on Earth and Mar's, concerns of famine within human space were raised. With Mars considered unsuited to large scale farming, a new source of food was required. The Alliance looked to Venus.

The primitive life and trees on Venus, like those found on Mars, were found to have been imported from Earth. Whilst they have evolved differently to life on the home world, this did make colonisation easy, with the world becoming the Breadbasket of human space after the importation of Earth wildlife and plants which were quickly integrated into the planet.

By 2400, the population of Venus had reached 5.4 billion people. The population is divided half in rural farms/towns with the rest in large cities. The military uses Venus alongside Earth and Triton for military training.

Earth-2400

By 2400 the homeworld and capital of humanity is entering a new golden age. The exodus of people to the colonies since the first settlements on Mars has led to stabilising the population at around 11.5 billion people from 13 billion at its peak. Environmental damage is being reversed and the gap between the rich and the poor is at an all-time low.

Earth is still the largest part of the Alliance. Most businesses maintain their headquarters their and it is the largest contributor to the Alliance Navy.

The Alliance

The Alliance is now ready to expand from the Sol System.

In cannon, the Alliance is a weak organisation that was not taken seriously at this milestone.

In this, the Alliance dominates human politics', having evolved from the empires of Europe to create a new world order, and having spread to 2 worlds (both with populations larger than the home world of some spices) in the home system.

Politically the Alliance has a federal government, headed by the High Chancellor and the Alliance Senate. Each nation that is part of the Alliance appoints Senator's to represent them, the number allowed dependent on population and economic/military importance. Laws passed by the senate must be followed by each nation, but they are otherwise allowed to govern in whatever way they want. Methods of national government vary, but most are democratic.

The Alliance Navy/Military answer's directly to the High Chancellor. It is maintained to a high standard officially due to the risk of Alien contact, and unofficially to deter separatism.

The total population is much higher than in canon, and the military will be much larger although not much more advanced.
