A Beautiful Lie

Our relationship was never bad in any way. We were never in a fight, and we never yelled at each other. We ate breakfast together every morning, we went shopping together, we took turns about dinner, cleaning the bathroom, go out with the garbage, decide which channel to watch, even the one who topped when we had sex.

He smiled to me, he held my hand. He kissed my cheek sometimes. I never noticed that he maybe was thinking of someone else, because we were engaged after all.

I thought we were happy together.

The morning started as usual. I went to get the newspaper while he made the morning coffee. When I got back he gave me my cup and said that he already put milk in it. Just that made me smile that foggy morning. I didn't see that this day would change everything in my life.

I brushed my teeth, got dressed and kissed him on the lips before I left for work. I saw him wave from the kitchen window when I opened the car door. I smiled to myself and drove to my work.

I was in a meeting until lunch, and I called him like I always do. And he answered and sounded happy like always. He had been out for a walk, he said, and he had started to think about what we might eat for dinner. I told him about what time I might be home, and the conversation ended with an "I love you" from both of us. After I hung up, I ate my lunch cheerily and soon returned to work.

The morning meeting didn't feel so boring after I've talked to him, so the day came fast to an end. I locked the door to my office, walked with quick steps to my car.

The road seemed to never end when, and I was starting to get hungry again. And I knew he had prepared fish at home, and I love fish. I smiled to myself when I finally reached our parking place. He ran up the stairs and pressed down the door handle.

It was locked.

I felt confused. He never locked the door when he was home, and I didn't remember he said he would go out. So I pulled out my key and unlocked the door.

He was nowhere to be found when I entered our apartment. It felt like someone poured ice cold water down my back. I took a few steps inside so I could see into every room from that spot.

All his things were gone; his pillows on the bed, his clothes from the closet, his tooth brush, his towels and his movies and books. Everything he had bought to the apartment, the TV, the chairs in the kitchen were also gone. I turned around a few times. I couldn't believe what had happened.

I found his ring on the table in the kitchen. There was no note anywhere.

Nothing.

No explanation.

No good bye.

"I never thought you would do this to me, Kyle."
